ROYAL SAPIEN – STACKED

If you’ve read any of my previous posts, you’ll know i’m a huge fan of John Digweed. I listen to his podcats and live mixes regularly. I’m assuming John has ultimate veto power when it comes to the guests he chooses for TRANSITIONS SHOW – like his mixes – are stellar.
Last May, he had NY native ROYAL SAPIEN (aka BEN MAUTNER) on the show. Ben had worked tirelessly to create an EPIC ableton mix called STACKED. His appearance on the TRANSITIONS show, was the debut of the mix.
According to Ben, he spent over 250 hours preparing the mix. When you listen to it, the effort is obvious. The mix features 321 songs over just ONE hour! Obviously, this is something that is only possible when the mix is created in a DJ friendly DAW like Ableton. In this case, Ben has blended together elements of songs such as vocals, drums, guitar and bass lines with similar keys and tempos from obscure and well known pop/rap/edm/rock, to create a beautiful tapestry of sound. Unlike DJ earworm’s ‘united state of pop’ mixes, it doesn’t sound too busy. It’s like one long huge fluid mash-up, and it’s my favourite eclectic DJ mix since Sashs’a BBC essential ableton debut mix in 2005.
I recommend this mix to EDM and NON-EDM fans, alike. Give it a listen. It’s a god-dang beautiful thang.
