Noncollective Nº.1 / Abel

12 07 2011

Very limited Unfortunately, there is 0 stock left of Abel’s “Aegean Sea” down at the always wonderful mix archive website Noncollective. The first Noncollective release in the series; “Aegean Sea” contains three edits by Dutch digger/DJ Abel Nagengastmarks – limited to 300 copies. I can comfortably say that this is my favourite ‘edit’ release of 2011, with beautiful cover art to boot. Don’t sleep! Check it.

While on the topic of Noncollective (which was started by UK graphic designer David McFarline), Melbourne’s Noise in My Head Michael K has just contributed to the collective with mix titled “High Life”.

‘High Life’ records a relaxed state of mind in a post-Japan comedown, mapping out organic Euro new age and fusion, funky Brazilia, late night sleaze and stoner boogie. – M.K.

Have a listen to the mix, and many others contributed by Abel, Chee S, Tako, Basso, and a lot more at the Noncollective website.

Seasons Changed

09 22 2011

It’s about that time again. Especially if you live in Montreal or Chicago, you can really feel the somber, bone-chilling cold starting to sneak through the sunshine. Much like the seasons, my taste in music is also shifting. Luckily, Youth from Australia has me covered with his new set of edits that includes slow-mo versions of Jeremih, Aaliyah, James Blake and my favorite, Kanye. Check them at his Bandcamp.

TIME FOR THE TERJELATOR

09 06 2010

Look, this man really needs no introduction. He is literally king of the edit. Hands down. Heck, even Prins Thomas gives him the full approval: “He’s doing it properly; I haven’t heard one shit edit by him. He is one of the very few disco producers that has the potential and knowledge that’s required to become a successful producer over-ground. He is trained and he can play any instrument you throw at him. He gets his guitar in the studio, quickly tunes it and an hour later he is playing it and recording tracks” (from an interview I did with Mr. Thomas a while back). Terje Olsen, best known as Todd Terje, part of the top cosmic/disco Norwegian Gods (along with Prins Thomas, Hans-Peter Lindstrøm, et al.) is not to be missed. Just your luck, the man himself is touring the whole of Ausland, playing a handful of shows which are as follows:

10/09/2010: Humm & Move Pres. Todd Terje at The Manor (Per)
11/092010: Lick It Pres. Todd Terje at Bar Soma (Bris)
16/09/2010: Adult Arts Club Pres. Todd Terje at Sugar (Ade)
17/09/2010: Children Of Realness Feat. Todd Terje at Roxanne Parlour (Melb)
18/09/2010: Adult Disco featuring Todd Terje at Civic Underground (Syd)

And if you arn’t familiar with Mr. Terje, then this little bio from Outlar is a good start:

“Following a string of celebrated releases leaning on everything from kitschy euro sounds to deep funk and latin jazz, the relatively new to the scene Todd Terje has already made his mark within dance music circuits. Gems such as the cheese monster “Eurodans” and the latin disco-fuelled edit of Jacko’s “Can’t Help it” under his Tangoterje edit-moniker instantly made industry types and clubbers alike go bananas, and whatever the 25 year old Norwegian puts his fingers on, it always comes out with that crucial blend of musicality and playfulness.

Growing up in the rural village of Mjøndalen, dance music influences were scarce, and no, there was never any Diskoklubb there. Not a lot of obscure disco or acid house in his milk either. However, during the early/mid nineties dance culture sneaked it way into even the most remote parts of Norway, thanks to the popularity of acts like The Prodigy and national radio stations filling prime time slots with underground jocks Olle Abstract and Pål “Strangefruit” Nyhus. On the more personal level, Terje’s sister was a close friend of the late Tore “Erot” Kroknes, and the tapes she brought home to the young Terje became a major source of inspiration. Playing around in his early teens on a crap PC together with his mate Dølle Jølle, Terje made his first attempts on house and jungle, which they played from cassette tapes on junior high school-dances. Maybe too young for old music back then, Terje reckoned that disco was all a bit silly – until Bjørn Torske’s “Sexy Disco” caught his ears in 1999.

Training to become a pianist Terje enrolled at a local music school, but to his disappointment there wasn’t much jazz being taught there. Gradually leaving the musical career path, he later moved on to studying physics at the University of Oslo. Although not longer aspiring to become a pianist, he was by no means over music. In 2001 Terje got in touch with Prins Thomas, who was at the time working at HS Records in Oslo. Thomas soon recognized his potential, and helped pushing Terje in the right directions. Oslo is a small place where like minded folks tend to join forces, and with his thorough musical understanding and nerdy like interest in old and new records spanning from that new Idjut Boys 12” to experimental synth bands very few of us have ever heard of, he soon became one of the key players on the Oslo electronic disco scene. Besides working on his own projects, Terje’s played on some of Prins Thomas’ tracks, and not to mention his remix of the Lindstrøm 12” “Another Station”.

Is it house, funk, techno or disco? Terje is speaks of catchy rhythms, dubby sounds, dreamy synth layers, cinematic moods, a playful approach and searching for that one nerve when asked to describe his music, and the resistance to being pigeonholed is obvious. His next ambition is to make a concept album ala Voyage’s first “around-the-world” release, if he can find time between other projects, studies and DJ gigs. Terje has already played around Europe, and is looking forward to gigs in Japan and NYC this summer. “I both like playing big room/macho style, but at the same time it’s the girls I play for really. So I guess it’s a mixture of high octane, leather homo-disco done up with mambo, coconuts and lipstick”. Definitely one to look out for.”

Now, onto the details of the Melbourne gig, which receives our huge tick of approval (hence, why we are supporting it). We are also honored to be supporting Terje on the DJ side of things as well. Here’s the blurb:

“Children of Realness launches Melbourne’s latest on-again, off-again mobile throwdown Friday September 17th, welcoming the Norwegian disco wunderkind & king of the edit TODD TERJE!!!

We can only imagine how thrilled Todd is to be our first guest! An enormous task, as he will be setting the bar for every joker that comes after. Also raising bars we have Melbourne’s finest disco freak-show this side of the Yarra – the fabulous XCAMPF…IREX will be in full effect bending minds in an effort to bring performance art back to the dancefloor, and in a Melbourne, possibly world first we are excited to announce the first NO MUSIC SIDEROOM. That’s right, we here at C.O.R. know how much you love the sound of your own voice so give those vocal chords a workout without all that noisey music for you to yell above, take a seat, meet a new friend, do some business, have a drink, relax, be your own talkback DJ!! In an effort to discourage the ever growing trend of talking/texting on the dance floor we are being proactive and have set aside a whole room for which you can sit in, mingle, make out, find your way back out of that hole you’ve been in since Todd dropped his Chic edit and back into the altered reality that is Children of Realness.”

And the lineup is as follows:

TOOD TERJE / OTOLOGIC / ANDEE FROST / POST PERCY / FRANCIS CHANG/MIKE GUERRIERI / WAVES @ NIGHT DJ’S / MARCO POLO

And some links: Facebook event pagepurchase tickets online at Moshtix (tickets are $25)

If you want some tickets but can’t deal with online shenanigans, contact the blog and we can work something out.

Now, onto the music. There is a huge pack of edits/remixes that Terje has done floating around the interwebs. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to find them, just go with it and Google. But here are some of his stuff randomly picked by my preferred media player of choice and uploaded for you guys to wack onto your preferred media player of choice.

MP3: George Shearing – Aquarius (Todd Terje Tangoterje Re-Edit)
MP3: Andreas Vollenweider – Belladonna (Todd Terje Re-Edit)

See you on the dance-floor.

PUNCHES

08 16 2010

Here are two artists that shouldn’t need too much info on.
Arthur Russell was a cellist, singer, collaborator with Larry Levan, Loose Joints, Dinosaur L, Felix, Talking Heads and many others. Basically a prodigy in the late 70’s/80’s NYC scene.
This particular track is a collab with boogie icon Lola Blank. I still love it.

MP3: Arthur Russell – Wax the Van

Speaking of Talking Heads, there’s really nothing new or rare I can offer you besides these tweaks of already perfect killer tracks I Zimbra and Born Under Punches. Just a tad more club friendly.

MP3: Talking Heads – Born Under Punches (Dobie’s Tab 2 Transient Re-edit)
MP3: Talking Heads – I Zimbra (Funk Sinatra Re-Dub)

PERSEO

08 16 2010

New spin-off label from Italians Do It Better titled “Perseo” has just released an edits CD. Although, there were three vinyl releases brought out by the label with these edits. However, this CD has those edits plus more!! – in disc form! Sooo many edits, not enough time. Head here to the IDIB store and purchase right away good sirs!. Edits are done by Bottin, M. Vogel and the man who’s the leader of the pack (from an IDIB perspective), Mike Simonetti. You can’t beat that “Brother Louie” track by Stories (who many would mistake for Rod S.)

P. LANGUAGE & DJ SPUN

06 10 2010

Still carrying the brightly lit torch from the recent Harri show, Animals Dancing are doing it to us again, presenting two of New York’s finest: Prince Language and DJ Spun – and I must say, the flame will be burning mighty hot for this one. Taking place in the Mercat basement, the king of all dungeons, boasting a beautiful sound system and ample dancing vibe.

Prince Language (NYC – The No Comprendo – DFA/k7/Editions Disco)

Prince Language’s acclaimed remix work for artists like LCD Soundsystem, The Rapture, Lindstrøm, MGMT, The Juan Maclean, Joakim, Editors, Sons and Daughters and Armand Van Helden, as well as numerous re-edits for the mysterious Editions Disco label, have earned his tracks a place in the sets of DJ Harvey, Tiga, Carl Craig, Rub N Tug, and Gilles Peterson, and have made him one of the go-to remixers in dance music today.

His series of mixes entitled ‘The No Comprendo’ have been some of the most talked about mixes of the last few years. In addition to numerous remix projects, he is currently at work on the forthcoming debut album of Prince Language & The No Comprendo as well as an upcoming project with Liv Spencer (Still Going, House of House).

Born and raised in Chicago, Prince Language has been strongly influenced by the city’s rich musical tradition, especially its heritage as the birthplace of House music. Raised on a steady musical diet of tapes of disco and house legends Ron Hardy and the Hot Mix 5, Language began DJing at Chicago warehouse parties and soon found himself holding down numerous residencies throughout the city.

Moving to New York in 1999, he soon met Philadelphian DJ Rich Medina, and together the pair established the now-legendary Stoned Soul parties. In 2002 he formed NegroClash, which has featured artists such as Afrika Bambaataa, Juan Atkins, Marshall Jefferson, DJ Spinna and Larry Heard/Mr. Fingers and in 2004 the Village Voice named NegroClash the “Best party in Manhattan to dance sweatily to smart music.”

DJ Spun (NYC – Rong Music)

Starting his music career in San Fransisco in the early 80’s, playing alongside bands such as the Dead Kennedy’s and Black Flag, DJ Spun began his DJ career opening for Kurtis Blow, and from there went on to his now legendary club nights, and appearing at countless parties the world over.

In 2003, with partner Ben Cook, they started the label Rong Music to release their own style-bending, genre-blending music as well as releases from Mudd, Chicken Lips, Woolfy and many others. The label offshoot, Tu Rong, also releases re-edits and remixes from the classic Nu Groove label.

Spun has released records on NOID, Editions Disco and Watchawannado and his recent remix work has included James Chance and the Contortions and Mudd as well as collaborations with Liv Spencer(House of House, Still Going), Eric Duncan(Rub n Tug, Still Going) and Daniel Wang.
Currently residing in New York City, Spun’s P.S.1/MoMA’s prestigious Warm Up Music Series is acknowledged as NYC best Summertime Party with “Warm Up” averaging 4000 attendees each Saturday. He’s also resident at APT. and 205 club with Eric Duncan of Rub n Tug.

Support from Animals Dancing residents Otologic and Tornado Wallace. Tickets from all moshtix outlets, promoters and from the venue (9348 9998). Or you can purchase directly from this link. First release $20; second release $25. Game on.
