NICK THAYER IN WINNIPEG

01 18 2012

Correct me if I’m wrong, but it seems like Winnipeg is a hotbed for ghetto funk. We’ve seen some incredible acts come through this city – NICK THAYER being the latest. We can thank our friends at MUSIC FIRST for this show.

I can’t imagine a producer as diverse as Thayer. Everything he does falls loosely into breaks, but the tempo ranges in his production makes him stand out. Yes, there’s breaks plain and simple, but also some of the best ghetto funk and dubstep I’ve heard Thayer has noodled.

The show is at The Zoo on Saturday, January 28. Tickets are $10 and are available at the usual sources. For more details check the facebook event page. Local support provided by some of Winnipeg’s finest, THE V@XXINE, and two of my personal favourite jocks ILL TYPE and  CODA with MC PUCONA.

Here’s a taste of what to expect, but I imagine it’ll be so much better, especially because Thayer plays sets almost consisting of edits he’s done himself.

MUSIC FIRST PRESENTS EPROM

12 09 2011

An evening of heavy bass from your friends at MUSIC FIRST. It all goes down Saturday, December 10 at The Zoo in Winnipeg.

They’re bringing in EPROM who is known for his diverse, funky and energetic sets, which cross the lines between live remixing and manipulation of hiphop and dubstep with his own obscenely bass-heavy neurocrunk transmissions. Check below and click here for more event info.

Local support is from Coda + MC Pucona and Theo Tzu.

Oh, and there’s also an afterparty. Details are to be announced, but you can get the scoop here.

Nu:Tone – Coming Back (ft. Heidi Vogel)

12 06 2011

Some Drum ‘n’ Bass action here from Nu:Tone (aka Dan Gresham).  From his latest release, Words and Pictures, we a have a decidely soulful number layed across a warm bed of sounds.  One of the best drum ‘n’ bass tracks I’ve heard all year.

DEEKLINE + ED SOLO + EDDIE K + MINUS + PYRAMID

10 27 2011

A deadly live mix from DEEKLINE, recorded at Shambhala earlier this year. (Incidentally, the festival started selling tickets for 2012 this year already – I’d suggest grabbing yours on the quick cuz it always sells out.)

Deekline and ED SOLO have a new release out too. It’s a full-on bass assult with remixes from Eddie K & Minus, as well as PYRAMID. First though, here’s a free jazzed-out cut for those groggy Sunday mornings, followed by a video for the single with what appears to be footage from Shambhala!

“Bring the past only if you are going to build from it”

10 13 2011

Via Lastnightsparty.com (“Analog Dead? I think not; ALL zzt casettes almost sold out in the first 2 days. Walkman is the new iPod.” Tiga on Twitter about the latest zzt release on cassette).

Bring the past only if you are going to build from it, someone once said. This post is dedicated to producers that I really respect at the moment. And because of that respect, I’d like to share only some “older” work cause in my opinion if you really like their work, you need to support these guys and buy their new stuff..

Pfirter. Juan Pablo Pfirter is often considered as one of the main icons of the electronic music scene in South America. He’s Argentinian and performs mostly in Argentina and the rest of South America. Although nowadays you can also find him regularly in Berlin and Barcelona. He has releases on Chris Liebing’s label and is played by Sven Väth, Richie Hawtin and Christian Smith.”De A Poco” is the B-side of an EP from 2009. Buy Pfirter EP’s over here.

Pfirter – De A Poco

Dubfire. This guy doesn’t need an introduction anymore of course. He is still able to combine in a brilliant way spanning punk, industrial, new wave, jazz, dub, hip-hop, house and, of course, techno. He appeared on respected labels including Cocoon, Get Physical and Minus. He still is an inspiration for the electronic dance music world and he will hopefully keep delivering the unexpected. Everyone knows Roadkill by now so therefore you can find a more forgotten Dubfire track which was released in 2007. Buy latest Dubfire stuff right here.

Meat Katie & D. Ramirez feat. Odissi – Stop The Revolution (Dubfire Remix)

A. Mochi. A. Mochi is a Japanese producer based in Tokyo. He is one of the few artists from Japan who receives attention from the techno scene around the world. He has been releasing 12 inches since 2006. You can find a track here that appeared on Figure in 2009. The “Black out EP” is often considered as the breaktrough EP of this Japanse producer. Keep an eye on him and try to catch him play when he’s in Europe again! Interested in more A. Mochi? Check out Beatport.

Time to say something about drum & bass  as well. It’s still waiting for a new qualitative wave of d&b if you ask me. I’m not into the vocal d&b pop which you can hear on every radiostation at the moment. So therefore it’s time to look back and point to drum & bass that could actually move people. First, a tune by DJ Hazard, it appeared in 2008 on the “Machete Bass EP”. This is still a superb track from English producer Hazard! Ok why not, let’s share another one. We’re going back tot 2002 when Ed Rush and Optical were ruling the place. This is the Ram Trilogy remix of Pacman! Enjoy!

FEATURECAST

07 26 2011

FEATURECAST has been in seriously high rotation at Manalogue HQ so I was pretty stoked to see this come our way this morning. Taken from Featurecast’s latest DJ mix “It’s Showtime” Bright Lights Funk cleverly mashes up DJ Die’s pounding D&B track “Bright Lights”, Hampton Hawes’ classic 70′s funk jam “The Web” and some classic 90′s hip hop in the form of Notorious B.I.G.’s the F.U.N.K.

MP3: Notorious BIG vs DJ Die vs Hamptom Hawe – Bright Light Funk (Featurecast’s Funkdafied Rockers Mix)

I highly recommend you peep Featurecast’s SoundCloud Page as well. I’ll save you some trouble by posting a few tunes, as well as the mix mentioned above.

MEME 2011 JUNE 23-26

06 22 2011

The Cube, Old Market Square. MEME 2010

The Manitoba Electronic Music Exhibition (MEME) starts tomorrow!

This is the second annual event for the one-of-a-kind festival in Manitoba. Like last year, you’ll find a tonne of talent, both local and from abroad. International headliners include THOMAS FEHLMANN (Berlin, The Orb) and DANDY JACK (Geneva) with HITORI TORI (Vancouver) and Winnipeg’s own VENETIAN SNARES and LEBEATO.

Inspired by Montreal’s legendary Mutek festival, MEME’s outdoor performances at Old Market Square are the focus for this year. Every show in this space is free and features all the talent you want to see anyway. Plus, they’ve added a beer garden with local sponsor Half Pints providing my favourite malt beverages (honestly – their beer is soooo tasty!).

The shows at the Zoo, Whiskey Dix and Alive will also highlight more than the usual club fair these venues are known for. As half of THE SHAKE, I’ll be representing the locals on the opening night. LOTEK and I are playing a tag-team set as usual, except we’re patching together two midi controllers for a 6-deck set. We’re in some great company too, playing along side Dan Gilson, Encode, Dubz, Dave Rad, Freaky Alien, Jamal Knight, Just For Kicks, Frankie Wild, and fellow contributor to Manalogue, Owen Reynolds.

This year’s festival embraced the visual aspect of performance with vjs and artists providing additional enjoyments. It’s all led by MRGHOSTY with help from a bunch of others.

Not enough? Well there’s also two half-day workshops on June 24 and 25 on how to make electronic music, with presentations from performing DJs.

Visit www.memetic.ca for the full lineup.

Bass Cannon

If you’re in Calgary, then you’ve definitely heard about the pK Sound Crew. For the rest of you, pK is responsible for anything that involves BASS within the bulk of western Canada. Their soundsystems have been the backbone of multiple festivals (including Shambhalla) and their custom made speakers have been installed in multiple clubs.

To show their appreciation for all that is BASS, they are throwing a party of epic proportions alongside Rottun and Contagious.

I present to you…..BASS CANNON!
