the interview show: raincity doubleshot

04 19 2011

Every once and a while it is nice to discover the hidden gems in your own town. This week, I’ve found two, Blood Diamonds and Matty C.

No one seems to know anything about blog sensation Blood Diamonds. So I called him up to get to the bottom of things. There is some weird dude screaming “Mass Effect” in the background. As revenge, I asked Blood Diamonds what he is singing in the shower lately. He wanted to sound all indie cool by claiming he sings Cut Copy‘s latest, but that isn’t what he ended up singing.

Matty C is a local DJ veteran and has just put out a single “Action.” When I called Matty C, he was playing with his baby daughter on the couch. You can hear her cooing in the background as we chat. Sweet shoegaze disco tracks and babies. This show never disappoints!

Matty C & Blood Diamonds on the interview show

Blood Diamonds (ft. Wet Look) “Lasting Love”

NEW: Warpaint – “Ashes To Ashes” (David Bowie Cover)

10 29 2010

NEW: Warpaint Ashes To Ashes (David Bowie Cover) covers

Los Angeles four-piece Warpaint released their fantastic first full-length The Fool on Rough Trade this Tuesday, but if you’re interested in seeing how the girls handle a classic eighties cover, you can listen to their recording of David Bowie’s 1980 hit “Ashes to Ashes.” It’s less dancy and more tender, with plunky, underwater piano taking the place of spacey synths. Emily Kokal and Theresa Wayman’s fragile, childish voices, stacked and layered upon one another in the way that makes the band’s original material so haunting, steer the song somewhere different from the original. The guitar work is more Smiths than Bowie; Jenny Lee Lindberg’s wandering bassline is irresistible. Give the cover a listen, but make sure you also check out Warpaint’s first record!

Tegan and Sara – Northshore (new video!)

08 10 2010

Late last month, Tegan and Sara released a video for On Directing, from 2009 album Sainthood. I mentioned that on the same day they shot that clip, they also filmed one for the song Northshore.

It's out now. Lots of guitar strumming, both of the real and air variety. Tons of Tegan. Not so much of Sara. That's all really.

B.O/

Les B.Os de John Carpenter
Phantom Of The Paradise
Orange Mécanique

Film/

Livre/

Lieu/

LCD Soundsystem – “All I Want”

04 16 2010

LCD Soundsystem All I Want favorite songs

Like “Daft Punk is Playing at My House” and “North American Scum” before it, “Drunk Girls” was a great, albeit predictable lead-in party single from LCD Soundsystem. Releasing the fun, accessible tune first has been a long-proven, working formula that James Murphy’s DFA have employed for years, and it almost always gets the job done. While this formula hasn’t failed LCD Soundsystem yet, they always have a back-up in stock to blow your face off the way “All My Friends” did.

“All I Want”, the fourth track into LCD Soundsystem’s new album, This Is Happening, comes as a nearly-seven minute dual-sequel to both “All My Friends” and David Bowie’s “Heroes”. This is no light praise, I know, but I also know that no other musician in our generation could get away with praise like that and deserve it. Throughout its entire occupancy in your ears, “All Your Want” flirts its way to that rarely traveled spot between pop and the kind of art that people want to make cover compilations for 25 years from now.

When I first heard “All I Want”, I greeted the song with skeptic. It sounded like it was meant to be epic, like I was meant to fall to my feet and worship it. In the back of my mind, I think I knew I would eventually succumb, but I was skeptical nonetheless. And I suspect that a chunk of the people reading this are on the same boat. My advice? Play it again. Then again. Do this throughout your day and tell me you have not fallen hard. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

This Is Happening is out May 18th on DFA. Pre-order it now.
