Marseille – Dak Dak EP

05 09 2011

What’s up dirty dancers?  I hope your weekend was as good as mine.  Personally, this was one of those weekends that was epic enough to make Monday suck even more.  However, instead of trying to decide the least painful way to off myself, I have found that this particular Monday hasn’t been too terrible. Why? Because I have been bumping Marseille‘s new EP, Dak Dak all day long. A true breath of fresh air, Marseille gives us something new in a constantly over-saturated scene. The young producer has been turning heads with his intricate synthesis, complex song structure and distinct sound.

These tracks have been championed by the likes of The Proxy, Feadz and Das Glow. So don’t sleep on this dark and driving EP, it does not disappoint!

R.I.P INSTITUBES

03 17 2011

It’s a sad day for french electronic music with the closing of institubes records a fine label that helped unearth some of the most talented young producers to come out of france over it’s nearly eight years of operation and also help shape the french electronic music scene in the 00′s. Run by Teki latex & Dj Orgasmic they showed us the musical stylings of Surkin, Das Glow, Bobmo, high powered boys and para one, quite the list if you want an electro hoe down.

Institubes has had to close its doors due to losing too much money through operating costs, and a tough uphill battle with the bigger companies focusing on the who and not the music. In an ever changing and demanding consumer world it seems that brand, image and self promotion have taken top priority over the quality and quantity of musical releases these days. Especially when music is released at light speed these days it can be hard to find yourself in the clutter that is the internet.

Never fear Teki & Orgasmic are still putting dope tunes out through their sound pellegrino imprint, things are not slowing up for the boys, with many of their releases featuring renaissance man, harvard bass, solo, l-vis 1990 and plenty more. The full press release can be found over at institubes records. it’s quite the read. Below is a look back at some of the great tunes released over the years from the institubes back catalouge.

2003

The first releases were dope french hip hop from L’Atelier, La fête de la musique compact bass, string samples plus smooth french rhymes make this a pretty tasty track. (i wish i knew french)

L’Atelier – La fête de la musique

2006

Surkin released his most famous working in 2oo6 (one of the golden years for electro) ‘ghetto obsession’, you should know it by now its a peak hour floor stomper. 2006 also saw the release of Para One’s debut album Epiphanie, which definitely had its moments with some raunchy basslines mixed up with hip hop style beats break this album up from being just another electro album.

Surkin – Ghetto Obsession

Para One – Midnight Swim

2008

Bobmo & Surkin teamed up to bring us the collaboration project ‘high powered boys‘ releasing the double sided ‘sounds of cain’ which included the monster club hit ‘hoes get down’. 08 also saw the release of dj orgasmic’s six pack anthem featuring teki latex spiting hot fire over electro hip hop cuts makes for a pretty rad offering.

high powered boys – Hoes get down

orgasmic – six pack anthem

2010

Having released plenty of tunes on institubes over the years das glow was one of the last artists to put out tracks with his phase IV EP, acid house inspired techno coupled to driving bass lines, great for taking things deep.

das glow – jerrycan

Rest in peace institubes, you will be missed. Be sure to scope out institubes back catalouge over at discogs

HATCH.

BNR Family XMAS - Strip SteveBNR Trax will be releasing a dual EP with the talents of Das Glow and Franco Berliner Strip Steve on its sister mp3 only label. They have had a slew of blog posts related to Xmas in the last week so I thought why not spread the xmas cheer with some new heat. Also new on the BNR trax moniker is Benny Rodrigues 'Rotterdam Rave', Jan Driver's 'Gain Reaction' and new for the pre xmas mayhem from Para One's EP titled 'Animal Style” / Nevrosis' to be released on the 20th of December. As you can see there is no shortage of talent or accomplishments in the labels short history and if the first few months are a yardstick then we should be inundated with hype new minimal from the imprint for years to come..Facebook // Twitter // MyspaceCheck out the interview with Strip Steve HERECarte Blanche - Politrix As UsualCarte Blanche - Do Do Do (Strip Steve Jacked Up Tool)

STRIP STEVE INTERVIEW

04 20 2010

Strip Steve will be in town very very soon to play a few shows around the state representing boys noize records with the biggie big being the Oh My! Party featuring Dj Falcon of the Daft Punk crew and Das Glow of Institubes this friday. Sadly Tuff Em Up’s latest recruit Barettso was hit with a few problems at home and had to pull on the trip.

Thanks to some special peoples I was able to shoot some q’s over to the mysterious french man.

The following ensued.

Ubbs: So the question everyone has been hanging out to know, where did the name Strip Steve come from?

Strip Steve: Comes from a “Garbage Pail Kids” sticker card a friend gave me.

Ubbs: While we were all looking at girls and trying to do the biggest skids on our bikes/pushies you were scratching vinyl.. do you ever feel privileged to have delved into music at such a young age?

Strip Steve: Well even if I’m very happy of what I do now at my age, I don’t think it’s such a privilege anymore at our times. Now everybody have a computer very early, and start doing music if they love it, you don’t need 10 000 dollar equipment to do it. I was passionate about music, other people are about other things, I think it all ends up in something useful in the end…

Ubbs: Having only been here a short time ago will this give you more confidence playing to the Australian crowd?

Strip Steve: Sure, I start to know it a bit better, and therefore maybe be able to foresee what to play more… Also now I’m less scared of crazy Australian people ahah

Ubbs: When mixing live do you think it is more important to engage your audience or keep your complete focus on the music?

Strip Steve: Well it is always a mixture of both, that’s the science of it.

Ubbs: You’ve already got a stack of releases under your name, whets next for Strip Steve for 2010 and onwards?

Strip Steve: First is the “DELTA DISCO REMIXED”, out on April the 26th on Beatport, with 7 remixes by Ian pooley, Sedat the Turkish Avenger, Das Glow, Rynecolgist, Lorenz Rhode, Clap Mike & finally Crystal.

Then hopefully a new EP by October, that I’m already pretty advanced in, and in the meantime various remixes I am working on…

Ubbs: Lastly, a bit of fun, your boats sinking, you’ve already got a life vest what’s the next thing you grab?

Strip Steve: My girlfriend and my cigarettes.

So Strips name really ain’t that cryptic, has the fine science of crowd-ology down pat and is ready to kick it this saturday at home night club for Oh My! so get your tickets here.
