It's the Supersound

Our love for Titus Andronicus, our generation’s Civil-War-concept-album-crafting, New-Jersey-celebrating, live-show-shredding answer to Bruce Springsteen, knows no bounds, and now that they’ve added “FCC-violating-Coldplay-covering” to that list of descriptive adjectives, we think those bounds have been extended a little more.

That’s right, the band posted their take on Coldplay’s “In My Place” on their Soundcloud over the weekend, and while their instrumentals stick to the original’s soft-rock standard to some extent, the band bring some traditional Titus Andronicus vocals (and, um, lyrical additions) to the table. As if that wasn’t enough, they also recruited a selection of friends and recorded a cover of the Boss’s own “Glory Days” (finally!) under the moniker Shea Stadium All Stars that’s also worth a listen. On 10/26 at 1PM PT / 4PM ET, American Express and YouTube will present Coldplay live in concert all the way from Madrid, as part of their excellent UNSTAGED series. If you recall, AmEx premiered the live concert series with an outstanding Arcade Fire show at New York City’s storied Madison Square Garden. UNSTAGED is continuing their tradition of pairing music’s foremost live acts with the film’s foremost auteurs – Coldplay’s Madrid concert will be shot by Anton Corbijn, director of stunning, critically acclaimed films The American and Control.

As I said, the show goes live at 4PM ET on Wednesday, October 26th. The livestream will be available on the website. Immediately after the simultaneous broadcast, the show will be available on mobile devices – like iPhones and iPads – for the rest of the evening. Click here to watch.

Coldplay – “Princess of China”

Mylo Xyloto is a strange mix of sincere reflection and aesthetic pleasure. It marks Coldplay’s fifth studio album, and the second in their quest to transform into an electronic-tinged pop outfit. But unlike the launching-off point, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, which only dabbled in this new direction, there is a conflict present in Mylo Xyloto occurring from a desire to combine old aspirations with new, splitting it down the middle, its lack of consistency making it feel as haphazard as a lucky dip.

Coldplay promised fans a second single from Mylo Xyloto (or as I like to call it Myl Oxyl Oto) on September 12th, and dammit, they got one. The new tune, called “Paradise”, doesn’t sound like a Coldplay song as much as it sounds like a less well put-together OneRepublic / Ryan Tedder song (here are various samples). Actually, it’s very possible Ryan Tedder had something to do with this, dude is busy. Scratch that, a google search proves that Ryan Tedder had nothing to do with this. That’s weird

Fresh off the oven, here is Robyn‘s cover of Coldplay’s “Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall”, which just aired on Radio 1′s Live Lounge with Fearne Cotton today. At first I thought it was an odd choice, as I think the original is not quite one of Coldplay’s finest moments, but I really do like Robyn’s synthy take of it. Then again, like Coldplay, she has always proudly worn her heart on sleeve. You see, it’s a good thing tears never show in a pouring waterfall… (okay that needs a bit work). I have ripped both the cover and the live performance of “Call Your Girlfriend” for your convenience. Download away!
