Too Many Sebastians Top Ten Most Amazing Albums of 2009

12 22 2009

So it’s another list for you all! Hope you aren’t bored yet, lists can be quite dull, but we enjoy them, could mean we’re dull? Anyway, here is our take on the 2009′s best albums, we’ve included compilations becuase we can and it’s our list. Just incase you were wondering…. ;-)

1. Vitalic – Flashmob [Pias]
See The Sea (Red)

Vitalic returned to show all these new electro kids a bit of class, a much different album than his debut was. Delicate in places, electric in others. But still 100% pure Vitalic.

2. Various Artists – Valerie & Friends
The Outrunners – Runaways

A compilation putting all your favourite Valerie artists (and their friends) on one CD. Russ Chimes, Anoraak, College and Maethelvin are just a few of the names who contriubute very memorable tracks to this awesome compilation.

3. Simian Mobile Disco – Temporary Pleasure
Flea In Your Ear

Probably a bit too much vocal for some peoples liking but the return of Simian Mobile Disco was a good one, a dodgy hippity hoppity track aside it’s a very solid album. Nobody makes dance music quite like these guys do.

4. 80Kidz – This Is My Shit [KSR]
Frankie (feat The Shoes)

The debut album from 80Kidz is a mixed bag, probably would have benefitted from a little trimming in places but it doesn’t stop it being immensly fun DIY electro. The collaborations with Hey Champ and The Shoes are pure joy.

5. Various Artists – LA Lights [Binary]
LexiconDon – Heart Attack

Quickly becoming a friendly rival to Valerie and their dreamy synth sounds. Binary‘s ‘La Lights’ compilation is full of artists that you will come to love very quickly. Keenhouse, NightWaves & LexiconDon all have big futures.

6. Boys Noize – Power [Boys Noize Records (good stuff)]
Starter

Boys Noize‘s ‘Power’ doesn’t quite work as an album, not sure if he ever meant it work as one. But the tracks that are good on it, they are very good indeed. But obviously better heard at the club!

7. Clark – Totems Flare [Warp]
Rainbow Voodoo

Don’t be put off Clark‘s ‘IDM’ tag, he is extremely listenable. His album ‘Totems Flare’ is the most listenable thing he’s done to date. Not music that you could handle all the time, just think of him as an occasional treat for the ears.

8. The Juan MacLean – The Future Will Come [DFA Records]
One Day

Surprised this album wasn’t hyped to death, it’s healthy mixture of synth pop, disco and dance. Can easily been listened to from start to finish without any need to skip a cringey track.

9. Yeah Yeah Yeahs – It’s Blitz!
Heads Will Roll

I’m not sure what YYY’s fans are like, did they like it? It’s basically a very good pop album, catchy choruses, very catchy choruses.

10. Phoenix – Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
Lasso

It’s obviously in danger of being waaay too over hyped, but there is a reason why people like this album so much, that’s because it’s good. Didn’t need three different releases though…

Too Many Sebastians Top Ten Most Amazing Remixes of 2009

12 21 2009

Blimey, another day, another list. A few more to come, I think this is the one where we go through our favourite remixes of 2009……

1. Maximo Park – Let’s Get Clinical (Clark Remix) [Warp]
Clark + Maximo Park is perhaps the weirdest idea for a remix in a while, but it’s pulled off really well, a truely unique remix.

2. Bag Raiders – Shooting Stars (Kris Menace Remix) [Bang Gang 12's]
Every now and then Kris Menace pulls an amazing remix out of his magical brain and this is one of them. His remix of Bag Raiders is sublime, dreamy disco at it’s very best.

3. FHR Vs. Database – Beaches and Friends (The Twelves Remix)
A remix of a mash-up? Well, well well. The Twelves turn this cool number into a part dancefloor, part kids cartoon tune. Love the craziness of the ending.

4. Priors – What You Need (Hey Champ Remix) [Eye Industries]
Hey Champ made many very good remixes this year, this is the best one in our opinion. The way they handle a song that is obviously a bit difficult to remix and they way the do it with such style ease and class says it all really.

5. Passion Pit -The Reeling (Yasutaka Nakata Remix) [Sony Japan]
We really hope that this Yasutaka Nakata remix of Passion Pit isn’t his last foray into remixing artists outside of Japan. More people need to be aware of his immense talents.

6. Headman – dirt (the c90s remix – short edit) [Relish Recordings]
Amazing remix from the c9o’s of Headman‘s dirt. It has this chilled out disco thing down well but with hints of Siriusmo beats. Delightful.

7. The Lowbrows – Dream In The Desert (Flight Facilities Remix) [Bang Gang]
The Lowbrows ‘Dream In The Desert’ was one our favourite tracks of 2008 and it was really pleasing it got the remix treatment it deserved with this 8 minute saxofunk remix from Flight Facilities.

8. Keenhouse – Ari-es (Hemingway Remix) [Binary]
There are loads of remixes of Keenhouse and his track Ari-es, most of them are very good. It was the Grum remix that caught my attention first, but it was the Hemingway remix that actually held it. Yacht Funk for life yo.

9. Lost Valentinos – Thief (Shinichi Osawa Remix) [EtcEtc]
If the dancefloor isn’t moving when the DJ drops this remix something is very wrong. This mix came at a time when I was doubting the direction Shinichi was moving in.. we all make mistakes.. ;-)

10. The Penelopes – Stuck In Lalaland (80Kidz Remix) [Citizen Records]
Ok, so this remix is essentially ‘Miss Mars’ with some vocals thrown over it. Is that a bad thing? ‘Miss Mars’ is a pretty sweet tune…

Maximo Park + Clark.

11 22 2009

Maximo Park signing to Warp seems like it’s going to be alot of fun, well, if this Clark Remix is anything to go by. Fan’s of Clark’s older output may be dissapointed with the new direction his work is taking (more commericial, apparently) but we like Clark both new and old and this remix will hopefully get some new people to check out his music.

Maximo Park – Let’s Get Clinical (Clark Remix) [M]

Yo! Beatport for nicer quality!
