Breakbot opening set, Chromeo ‘Night Falls Tour’, Toronto, November 2011

01 25 2012

Breakbot mixes don’t come around all that often, but when they do they are, without fail, amazing. Nobody does funky as well as this dude, and with his album finally on the way, listening to this mix gives you a great way to get a flavour of what’s to come.

This was recorded during Chromeo’s ‘Night Falls Tour’ back in November of last year, so there might well be some snippets of new production in there if you listen carefully! Big ups to Chromeo for uploading this beauty.

BEASTIE BOYS + PSYMBIONIC

01 19 2012

The latest remix from PSYMBIONIC is a spicy, glitchy shuffle. The Beastie Boys’ classic “Intergalactic” is textured with basslines and a stuttered beat. Both the vocal and instrumental versions are offered free downloads. The drop at about the three-minute mark is particularly deadly – this one’s going on high rotation.

Fiona’s Favourite Concerts of 2011

12 19 2011

I have been so blessed this past year in all aspects of my life. I graduated this past June from the University of Toronto with an Honours B.A. I interned at one of Toronto’s most prestigious indie labels, Dine Alone Records. I had the opportunity to attend and provide media coverage for CMF 2011 and NXNE 2011. I created a Casting Call video for Much Music which I am so very proud of. It’s been a great year — its truly been eye-opening and has resulted in a lot of personal development. I am so thankful to be surrounded by great people that continually inspire me to be the best person I can be. I am also lucky to know some really amazing people and be able to call them my friends. I look forward in seeing what 2012 has in store for me. Fionas Favourite Concerts of 2011

Chromeo @ Sound Academy (11/02/11)

11 06 2011

Chromeo @ Sound Academy (11/02/11)
To this date, I have seen Chromeo perform three times (four times – if you count the Junos) and they have yet to disappoint me. Chromeo’s Night Falls tour stop in Toronto was hosted at the Sound Academy. The night started off with French DJ and producer, Breakbot. I got to the venue just as he was finishing up his set with his remix of Chromeo’s “When The Night Falls” and his own track “Baby I’m Yours.”

Next up was Mayer Hawthorne & The County — What a delight to see them perform. Playing a great selection of tracks from Mayer Hawthorne’s 2009 debut album, “A Strange Arrangement” and his latest album, “How Do You Do.” Their set kept me moving and singing along to the songs. Mayer Hawthorne is definitely very talented with his throwback soul sound – a sound that is rarely heard nowadays. I really enjoyed Mayer Hawthorne’s set. His stage presence and charisma just draws audience members in and makes people feel good with his soul influenced pop songs. Fun fact: Hawthorne revealed during his set that he is in fact 1/4 Canadian.

Chromeo @ Sound Academy (11/02/11)

Every Chromeo set starts the same….with the fans anxiously awaiting the electro-funk duo to get on stage and chanting “CHROME-E-OHH-OHHHOHH” over and over again. Then the intro track to Fancy Footwork blares, lights start flashing and the audience chants ”CHROME-E-OHH-OHHHOHH” in unison. It’s a beautiful thing to be a part of. Every time I see Dave 1 doing his thing – my mind goes to a very very dirty place – He is everything I could ever want in a man – intelligent, musically inclined, tall, handsome, cool and last but not least, sexy as hell. UGH! If only…

Anyhow, the two played their largest ever Toronto show last Wednesday night. Dave 1 took the time to graciously thank Toronto fans for  their support and listed on venues the duo have played in the past. The crowd was dancing and shaking song after song. The duo played an amazing set with tracks from all three of their full-length albums. Tracks included, “You’re So Gangsta,” “Needy Girl,” “Fancy Footwork,” “Tenderoni,” “Bonafied Lovin,” “Momma’s Boy,” “Call Me Up,” “Night By Night,” “When The Night Falls,” “Hot Mess” and “Don’t Turn The Lights On.” Simply put, any Chromeo concert you attend turns out being a giant dance party — and I hope that never changes.

Also, thank you to Melissa N. for sharing her photo of Chromeo with me.
