When James Mercer and Danger Mouse revealed that their EP Meyrin Fields was recorded at the same time as their self-titled debut, they had claimed the songs did not have the same feel as the album, but were too good to be B-sides. That seems to be an understatement. After hearing first track “Windows,” a new track has surfaced, “Heartless Empire,” that sounds nothing like any past Broken Bells songs.

As we all discovered last week, James Mercer and Brian Burton aka Danger Mouse’s joint project, Broken Bells, will be releasing a four track EP to follow up last year’s highly regarded self-titled debut. Titled Meyrin Fields, the songs were recorded during the same time as the LP but apparently did not coincide with the rest of the album. Rather than releasing them as B-sides, the duo kept the tracks to themselves, until now. The first tune comes to us in the form of “Windows,” which has a considerably darker vibe to it than anything on Broken Bells, and rocks out a lot harder as well. Check it below.
