Getting Back Into the Swing of Things

12 15 2011

Well, if I’ve never mentioned before; I’m doing my Masters in Science and I’m getting close to completing it aka shit’s hitting the fan. I just finished my big presentation, so all is calm for now until I have to start writing my thesis. Before any of that, holidays come first and the blog just got pushed back to near the top. Listening to music again, I actually haven’t really listened to much other than the big albums that came out recently for the last month. First time listening to Hype Machine in a while and hearing some great tracks, first on the list is the Adventure Club remix of Metric’s Collect Call which strangely reminds me of Ellie Goulding‘s Starry Eyed. The originals are vaguely similar, but the remix makes it a lot closer for me. Strangely enough, the Adventure Club remix is dubstep, but I don’t hate it. Very strange. Posting the Russ Chimes remix of Ellie Goulding with this. Next track is the Ipaneema mash-up Rock your Weapon at the Cinema which has the Madeon remix of Deadmau5‘s Raise Your Weapon, the Skrillex remix of Benny Benassi‘s Cinema, and a little shout out to MJ Rock With You at the beginning. I was going to post the Madeon remix as well because it’s such a great remix but I already posted it a while back. Lastly, the Royskopp remix of Kings of Leon The Immortals, intro threw me off a bit but what a great track.

Metric – Collect Call (Adventure Club Remix)

Ellie Goulding – Starry Eyed (Russ Chimes Remix)

Madeon x Benny Benassi x Skrillex x Michael Jackson – Rock your Weapon at the Cinema (Ipaneema mash-up)

Kings of Leon – The Immortals (Royksopp Remix)

GDD™ Morning Update: The Grammy’s, Future Music Festival, Boys Noize & Mr. Oizo, The Chemical Brothers, LCD Soundsystem

12 02 2011

Happy Friday! We’ve made through yet another week and I have another GDD™ Morning Update to close it out. Today’s news features Electronic Music Grammy nominations w/ Skrillex, the Future Music Festival lineup, Boys Noize & Mr. Oizo start Handbrakes, The Chemical Brothers’ live DVD, & LCD Soundsystem’s final show documentary. See it all after the jump.

Electronic Music Grammy Nominations w/ Skrillex For ‘Best New Artist’

Despite the chorus of disbelievers, there’s no doubt 2011 has been good to Skrillex. Now the bro-step/complextro/’insert name here’ superstar has bagged himself a Grammy nomination in the ‘Best New Artist’ category.

Skrillex is up against Bon Iver, Nicki Minaj, The Band Perry and J. Cole – a mixed bunch if ever there was one. Usually dance music is neatly confined to the Best Dance Recording category, so this is a significant moment if you count these kinds of moments as significant.

Skrillex does also appear in the Best Dance Recordings nominees, alongside fellow top-earners like David Guetta and Deadmau5. Robyn’s Call Your Girlfriend is in there breaking up the boys’ club as well.

Arguably the standout of all the dance/electronic nominees is Australia’s own Cut Copy, whose very fine album Zonoscope has scored a nod. The accolade comes after a strong year for the band on the Stateside circuit. What a Grammys it would be if the boys from Melbourne muscled out the competition!

GRAMMYS DANCE NOMINEES

BEST DANCE RECORDING

Raise Your Weapon – Deadmau5 & Greta Svabo Bech
Barbra Streisand – Duck Sauce
Sunshine – David Guetta & Avicii
Call Your Girlfriend – Robyn
Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites – Skrillex

BEST DANCE / ELECTRONICA ALBUM

Zonoscope – Cut Copy
4×4 = 12 – Deadmau5
Nothing But The Beat – David Guetta
Body Talk Pt. 3 – Robyn
Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites – Skrillex

BEST REMIXED RECORDING

Cinema – Benny Benassi (Skrillex Remix)
Collide – Leona Lewis (Afrojack Remix)
End of Line – Daft Punk (Photek Remix)

Fans of the duo will be pleased about the pairing, which promises to throw up some interesting new tunes from two of the most exciting producers in electro.

LCD Soundsytem Final Show Documentary to Screen at Sundance

The 2012 Sundance Film Festival is going to be heavy on James Murphy. As reported yesterday, the LCD Soundsystem frontman will appear in a feature film called The Comedy, which will screen at the fest. And now, the Arcade Fire fan Twitter Arcade Fire Tube points out that Sundance has announced that the festival will screen the documentary SHUT UP AND PLAY THE HITS, which chronicles the final LCD Soundsystem show at Madison Square Garden this April.

The Sundance site’s description of the film reads: “A documentary that follows LCD Soundsystem front man James Murphy over a crucial 48-hour period, from the day of their final gig at Madison Square Garden to the morning after, the official end of one of the best live bands in the world.” It’s part of Sundance’s non-competition “Spotlight” category.

The documentary was directed by Dylan Southern and Will Lovelace. As Arcade Fire Tube points out, the film’s title comes from Arcade Fire’s Win Butler.

GDD™ Escape From Wonderland 2011 Recap + Set Downloads

11 03 2011

You know it’s going to be an interesting day when you wake up to the sight of 6:45 am on the clock and you’re exhausted from partying to the sounds of SBTRKT, Laidback Luke, 2manydjs, Fatboy Slim, and Rusko the night before at HARD Haunted Mansion. Early last Saturday morning, my friends and I made our way back to the west side from downtown LA, only to rest and prepare for our journey inland to Insomniac’s first Halloween massive, Escape From Wonderland. See what it was all about after the jump…

We arrived just after sundown and the sound of bass in the distance left me both anxious as well as strangely calm to know that we had reached our destination and our night was finally upon us. We made it through the relatively short security checks, and as we walked into the NOS Event Center, we noticed the dense fog that enveloped the area in and around the lagoon, which signaled that we were entering a place of Halloween debauchery. After just a short walk from the entrance, I felt completely immersed in the Escape From Wonderland. I was surprised to see the excellent work Insomniac did to create such a reality altering environment, yet in the back of my mind, I expected their masterful execution. The dark had fallen and there were hordes of monsters, zombies, and whatever else hastily weaving their way through in front of me. The hundreds of lights suspended in the air were flickering above, and I could hear the pounding music that beckoned me to come indulge in a hedonistic fashion. I feel that Insomniac did just about everything they could to bring more to the table other than music with haunted mazes, rides, 3D attractions, and art installations. The Insomniac founder, Pasquale Rotella, always stresses that he aims to create a comprehensive experience for his attendees and he certainly did just that with his first Halloween effort.

As with any other Insomniac event, the production was first-class and included powerful sound systems as well as over-the-top light designs and no shortage of lasers. The main stage was the awe-inspring colossal structure that Insomniac has used in the past and I literally felt like I was standing in a gigantic space ship. In the Ghoul’s Graveyard tent, it was a great time dancing dirty with the skeletons and ghosts hanging from the ceiling, and I must say that I laughed to myself at the absurdity of the sight… Everything came together very nicely and definitely enhanced the experience.

Now for the music… I gave myself a very energetic start to the night at the Chopping Block (dubstep/dnb stage) with Brookes Brothers throwing it down and playing an absolutely killer set that was fitted perfectly to the vibe of the crowd throughout. After receiving a solid dose of drum ‘n’ bass, I made my way out to the Ghoul’s Graveyard (house tent) and the Slaughter House (main stage) to catch the end of Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike and a portion of AN21 & Max Vangeli. Both of the stages were overflowing with energy as everyone seemed to be in tune with one another and the good vibes acted as a catalyst for dancing. In the span of a couple hours I saw the impressive R3hab, Subfocus, Afrojack, and Benny Benassi. I must note that when Afrojack was playing, the Ghoul’s Graveyard was spilling far out of it’s boundaries and once/if you made it in the tent, it was more of an oven than a graveyard. Also, it was awesome to see Mr. Benassi appropriately dressed in a Superman costume. The rest of my night consisted of Pendulum heaviness and big room Steve Angello. You can always count on Steve Angello for great mixing, track selections, and hyperextended buildups that foster a level of tension that I find unique to Steve. During his set was the first time I ever participated in a sit down/jump up ordeal and it got pretty insane when the jump up was triggered by the Swedish House Mafia & Knife Party track, “Antidote”. After the music had ended and my experience was complete, it was clear that Escape From Wonderland was one of the very best electronic music events I had ever attended.

Escape From Wonderland was excellent in all respects and above all, I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I want to thank Insomniac for providing us with consistent, quality events, and I look forward to continuing my support.

New Previews from PeaceTreaty

10 18 2011

Yesterday, our boys Josh & Angelo from PeaceTreaty sent us over a pair of previews of their upcoming remixes that will be hitting Beatport in the next couple of weeks, and we are impressed as usual. The first track is a hot n’ heavy new take on Moby‘s ‘After,’ complete with a light synthy Big Room build and a heavy bassline drop that I can’t wait to hear on some professional speakers. Already gaining support from Steve Angello, Hardwell, and Tommy Trash, this remix will be released on Moby’s Lil Idiot Records on Monday, October 31st. The second remix on our plate is Diplo & Oliver Twizt‘s ‘Go,’ and personally, I can really hear the always-improving PeaceTreaty signature sound in this one. This EP will be released on Mad Decent on November 8th, and you probably have heard it played out already by some people you may have heard of: Tiesto, Benny Benassi, Afrojack, Chuckie, and Mr. Aoki. Keep ‘em coming fellas!
