Plastikman Live 1.5 in action

Plastikman Live was one of the undisputed highpoints of the 2011 Future Music Festival tour, and plenty of ITMers have been singing its praises ever since. Being the perfectionist that he is, though, Richie Hawtin’s vision was only in its formative stages then. Now the techno maven has developed Plastikman Live 1.5, with a world tour underway. His hopes for this incarnation are nothing if not ambitious. As he told Data Transmission: “I wanted to bring the most forward thinking, underground, live-electronic show to the centre stage.”

Hawtin’s creative partner in the journey of Plastikman Live is visual designer Ali Demirel, who has helped bring the intense show to life. We’ve been itching to see just what the team has come up with for the 1.5 redux, and now Demirel has produced a video that shows the full 60-minute performance in a dazzling 60 seconds. Let’s just say that it’s a very impressive minute of YouTube-ing, which you can watch below.

DJ Mag Top 100

DJ Mag’s Top 100 poll has become an influential ratification of the hottest DJ’s out over the past few years and is now announcing the results for the second year in a row with the poll being fully based on a public vote. In conjunction with Trackitdown, a widely known digital market for electronic dance music, an annual buzz as to whom is becoming the best new entry, taking the largest climb upwards and whom is elected the winner begins in post-summer to run through to the prestigious Amsterdam Dance Event – the week-long festival which is becoming more significant to the EDM industry by the day.

In terms of confusion concerning the results; many have come to judge and rate the world’s DJ’s along with their placings on the poll which, in truth, has come to be based principally on the CD-spinner’s performances on the charts and as producers instead of what it ultimately was intended to rate – mixing and general DJ skills. Although skillful discjockey’s like James Zabiela may not place themselves and their outstanding knowledge on everything mixing and transitions at the forefront, one should keep in mind the top 100 results are only approximations as to who are the most renowned names in modern-day clubland, despite the fact that an appearance on the poll is indeed a prestigious award to any DJ and/or producer.

In an epoch where DJ’s are like the modern-day rockstars and attract thousands and thousands of raving club-goers to, if not such festivals as Ultra in Miami, Tomorrowland, Electric Daisy, Electric Zoo and Sensation, weekly events in nearby clubs and venues across the globe, this poll is now a solid and utmostly intriguing statement as to whom has had a successful year and who has not. Be sure to scim through the listed results after the break and compare them to the results of 2010.

Congratulations to David Guetta for taking over pole position after a 4 year supremacy of Armin van Buuren, to Avicii, Afrojack and Swedish House Mafia for fighting themselves into the top 10, to Skrillex for the best new entry, to Calvin Harris for the biggest climb and a big congratulations to talents like Hardwell, Alesso, AN21 and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike for finally breaking themselves into the DJ Mag top 100 poll.

REVIEW: “Tonight” at Amnesia, Ibiza

06 28 2011

Last Tuesday we were at Ibiza super-club Amnesia for the launch of ‘Tonight’ the brand new weekly brought to you by the Together group. With all-star lineups every tuesday between now and September 16th, Together are set to bring some of the freshest names in EDM through San Antonio for a unique night of partying, with residents Eric Prydz and Annie Mac.

Rocking the club to its core on tuesday, Sebastien Leger treated Amnesia’s packed out Terrace to a fantastic set of snappy percussive tech-house from the booth, before Eric Prydz took to a stage unveiled at the other end of the room, surrounded by LCD visual blocks. Pryda absolutely caned through his set – I’d even go so far as to say he’s the sickest big room DJ I’ve ever seen, the guy is a master on CDJs. We’re now eagerly awaiting the debut show under his Cirez D moniker at SW4 this August. In the meantime though, stream his new track ‘Mirage’, and download his recent ‘EPIC’ show from Brixton Academy in April:

10th June 2011. Essential New Tune: Pryda — Mirage by PeteTongsEssentialNewTune

Eric Prydz Pres. EPIC – o2 Academy Brixton, London 02.04.11 (Full Set) by Eric Prydz Official

While Sebastian Leger, 2000 and One, and Eric Prydz were lighting up the Terrace, the main room played host to a cracking set from A-Trak, before Nero and Chase & Status went heavy with their respective sets of jump-up dubstep on what’s rumoured to be the loudest sound-system on the planet. Definitely points on the board for fans of The Bass.

Overall, the Together group are attempting to draw a different crowd to Amnesia on the west side of the island, boldly bringing their new night to a club that already hosts some of the world’s biggest parties including Cream and Cocoon. But after the success of the launch event, and judging by the array of talent they have lined up for the rest of the summer, we predict ‘Tonight’ to be the next San Antonio summer smash. Feast your eyes on these lineups:

The Dirt #32: Botnek

05 09 2011

This week we bring you another special edition of our weekly piece, “The Dirt” by the up and coming Canadian production duo, Botnek. You may remember them from a post GDD™ resident  ///Bones put up a few weeks ago featuring their tracks “Dozer” and “Pop Music.” We are not the only ones to recently take notice of this fast-rising DJ duo, as their unreleased track “Owls” was featured by famed Radio 1 DJ Annie Mac on her mix show this past week, and Radio 1 DJ Kissy Sellout has championed their sound so much that he asked them to do an official remix of his newest track “Homesick.” If you like what you hear and want even more Botnek, make sure to pick up their first EP “Plonk” which was officially released just TODAY over on Beatport.

You can check out all their newest tracks + exclusive Debut/Download of a killer new track of theirs after the jump! Enjoy!

Marble Players (Para One, Surkin & Bobmo) – Marble Anthem (Snippet) by Marble Music

“when we listen to tracks we wanna hear sounds that we haven’t heard done better before by someone else.you need a reason to wanna play a song, there can’t be other tunes that do the same thing but better.every once in a while you come across a totally next level jam that pushes things just a little further, this is one of them.this is the kind of track that when it drops you are either extremely on board, or can’t stand it, and that kind of reaction makes good club music!”

New Song “Owls” played by Annie Mac on BBC R1 by BOTNEK

“owls” is an incredibly new jam for us, doesn’t even have a label yet! story behind it is we were both pretty messed up at this party, and we just started talking about this funny drop idea, erick happened to have his laptop in his bag, and we just grabbed the laptop, some headphones, and some beers, and starting making bleep noises. when i met annie mac in montreal at her gig i gave her the jam, and was super stoked that she dropped it last night!”

BOTNEK – Plonk (Preview) by BOTNEK

“we probably shouldn’t have posted this so long before it’s release, but we’re so stoked that people are still really excited about it! it’s funny, cos we made it really quickly, just by replacing some sounds from this ok demo we started, and immediately just burst out laughing at the drop. we were thinking, “is this club music? will people dance to this?”  and luckily people have really reacted well!”

01 Laquisha (feat Taiwan) by GottaDanceDirty

“french fries is one of our favourite producers.  his stuff is just so impeccably well mixed, especially the drums when this track first came out we were floored, it just crushes in the club.  the chords and the vocals give it a very long shelf life for us. can’t wait to see where he’ll push it next.”

Datsik – Firepower (Munchi Moombahcore Rmx) by Munchi

“when we first heard the idea of moombahton being basically slow dutch house, we thought there was no way that it’d be effective. then we came across munchi and jams like this, which bang so hard.  we love how simple this track is, and how much attitude it has. this is like the waka flocka flame of moombahton.”

123 (Original Mix) by Palms Out Sounds

“lol boys are doing great stuff this year, and its dope to see fellow producers from montreal getting recognition.this is our favourite jam of theirs because of that undeniable hook and that tropical percussion. it’s good summer vibes from these boys!”

Munchi – Gracias by Munchi

“this is a good example of a jam that could outlive the trendy genre it belongs to. we’re calling it moombahton for now, but it could live in any reggaeton, latin or dancehall set for years. it’s sampling a pretty famous samba track, but brought up to speed with modern production. just proper feel good vibes!  this will get girls dancing for sure”

Keith & Supabeatz – What Does It Take (Original Mix) // HIGHER PLACE EP by Keith & Supabeatz

“we wanna be just like keith and supabeatz when we grow up.  their stuff just keeps getting hotter.they just know how to extract the best ideas in a track and get the most of out them, and this track is a great example. the hook is really simple, and works.  no need to overthink things.  super effective track.”

Yelle – Safari Disco Club (BeatauCue remix) by BeatauCue

“Beataucue have the ability to frustrate us because they are so good haha. we love them because they’re not afraid to make something almost absurdly wild for their drops.the kind of almost comical noises that really separate a simple dutch track from something more forward thinking and next level.also their stuff just sounds incredible in clubs.  tracks like this come hard.”

Kissy Sell Out & Oh Snapp!! – “Homesick (Botnek Remix)” by BOTNEK

“we were super stoked when kissy sell out asked us to do a remix for his new single, being fans of his radio show.it was a funny situation tho cos we only had a couple days to do it, and i was moving at the time, so we had to work really fast! ideally we would have spent more time on it, but we tend to work a lot better under stress, so it kinda worked out! we hesitated at first thinking the drop was a little too wacky for people, but had no time to rethink it, so it had to stick! hope people like bird noises haha.”

Wes De Graaf VS Dooze Jackers – Fear Nah Ragga (Snippet) by Dooze Jackers

“dooze jackers are our montreal brothers! we’re making sure this city gets its fix of fresh zaps and beeps. this is still for us their best track. they’re pretty consistent with that military drum style dutch sound, and what we love about it is is that whole “more with less” philosophy. this track is so stupid simple, and thats what make it so on point. that drop with just kicks and flutes always gets me.”

EXCLUSIVE NEW TRACK!!:

Botnek – Technopical (Right click save)

“Here is a jam we literally finished today.  just wanted to hook up a little exclusive for the blog, and thank everyone for all the support! buy 100 copies of plonk when it drops monday, k thanks!”

Crookers, Neoteric, Wax Motif – Springer

04 13 2011

I have to clarify some mis information in a post that i did a couple of weeks ago.

After listening to BBC radio’s preview of ‘Dr Gonzo’ by crookers and savage skulls, I was under the impression that, that was the new production name of the alliance between the two producer teams.

It has now been drawn to my attention that ‘Dr Gonzo’ is the name of the EP and that crookers were collaborating with Savage Skulls om. The reason for this mistake was because Annie Mac didn’t really clarify the project properly on her radio show.

to further on the points above, dr gonzo is a 3 song ep which include also Wax Motif and Neoteric playing a significant role. (Where were the props for them Annie???)

after Crookers stint away dabbling in other genres such as hip hop, it gives me great pleasure to say that Crookers are back doing what their best at. making drum driven dance that everyone loves to lose their shit too!
