Punks Jump Up Interview

01 23 2012

Punks Jump Up Pic 1

Punks Jump Up are a modern-day dream team that came together a few years back while they were both living in London.  The duo consists of Joe and David, who together possess a musical power that generates magic on track after track.

2011 was a milestone year for PJU.  They released Chimes Pt. 1 to critical acclaim and remixed everyone from Housse de Racket to the Supermen Lovers.  These uber stylish lads also found time to work with graphic designer Michael Willis on Stiff Couture, their clothing line that helps bros from all over the world get shagged.

2012 will be even bigger.  They’re set to release the Get Down (Special CCCrash Mixxx) EP on January 30, which features remixes by JBAG, Alex Gopher, Fare Soldi, Zero Cash, and Deadstock 33′. Get Down is catchy track that will force you to take your dance floor bump and grind to a whole new level.

Get Down (Special CCCrash Mixxx) is your modern homage to Prince, among others; do you remember your first experience listening to the cultural icon?

Purple Rain! Both the album & movie made us aware of the little big man. We’ve followed him ever since. Have to admit that at the time Apollonia caught our attention more than Prince haha. Prince’s production & amazing songs stood out brilliantly then & still does.

We’re still trying to work out how he did things, especially the vocal on “If I Was Your Girlfriend”.

Appolonia, if you’re reading this…?

Justin Robertson has worked with (and re-worked) some of the biggest acts in music today, including FatBoy Slim and Bjork. How did this collaboration come about?

We used to go clubbing with him back in the days, especially at the Social & have loved his stuff all the time. Luckily for us we have now got to know the great man ourselves & he also lives around the corner from our studio. We used to hammer one of his earlier tracks as Deadstock 33s called We Could Be. We thought he could put his magic touch on Get Down, which he did!

In your opinion, what has been the worst trend in dance music over the past 2 years?

Well, we’re not massive fans of the latest version of Noise/dubstep. Brostep anyone??!! If we don’t like something we usually ignore it but that particular style gets under our skin at the mo. Keep it funky!

If you could travel back in time to the 1980’s, what’s the first thing you would do?

Probably have to be going to the Music Box in Chicago checking DJ Ron Hardy doing his totally ahead of time mix of  disco, electronic stuff, industrial, italo. It totally sums up what we’re into from that time. We would also pop in at Dance Mania’s office for a one day work experience.  Wouldn’t mind being a fly on the wall in the studio when Lydon & Wobble & co recorded Metal Box as well.

Metal Box or Music Box? Tough call!

Music Box Chicago

You’ve collaborated with both Kate Moross and Michael Willis, two very influential graphic artists and designers. Are there any other graphic designers/artists you’d like to work with in the future for Stiff Couture?

We’re still working with Michael Willis since we’ve got a great style going with him & we’re big fans of his work.  As far as other names go we’re also into Trevor Jackson, Will Sweeney, Jiro Bevis (who designed one of our cool logos & t shirt!) & a guy called Rimo who’s doing cool stuff on the Marble label.

PJU and Moross

Blockhead

Punks Jump up collaboration with Kate Moross (first photo) and Michael Willis (second photo) for Stiff Couture.

What’s your biggest fashion regret?

Probably David’s early punkrock phase, there were no accessories to find where he lived so he had to put studs on puffer jackets etc, wasn’t totally spot on in the punk rule back but hey, it’s DIY!

What was it like working with Canadian favorite Dave1 from Chromeo?

It was through Bjorn Yttling from Peter Bjorn & John actually. He sent the track we’d written to Dave1 & he loved it & wanted to do it. He then recorded the vocal in NYC & we finished the thing off in London. It was a smooth affair & we love the result to bits! Watch this space.

If a road trip from London to Canada were possible, what would be on your travel mixtape?

A right mixture. Probably as we drive out of west London there would have to be some reggae dancehall involved. After that it would be a right mixture of everything from Grace Jones, Yello, Clash, Moroder, various Italo gems, 80′s boogie via Dance Mania, Trax Records, golden era hip hop to early DFA records, Output, Gomma to Kitsune comps, Klein records, Relish…list goes on!

Or we could stick on all the mixes on Radio Soulwax to cover it all.

Would you two ever rock the Canadian Tuxedo (denim on denim)?

Absolutely totally! Has to be stone-washed though. We’re serious!!

Canadian Tuxedo

Get Down is your first remix EP of 2012, what else does this year have in store for PJU?

Mr Overtime feat Dave1 is coming out in April, we’re really looking forward to that one..! Also an EP for the summer & more singles. We got loads more of colab tracks which will see the light of day too!  We’re also doing a US tour in April & May. We like 2012!

If you were to attend Hogwarts, would you be in Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw or Slytherin?

Joe would be in Gryffindor cause he’s the bossy one.  David would Ravenclaw cause he’s hovering about.

And lastly, who’s the bigger babe, Kate or Pippa Middleton?

Eh …Pippa .. as in Salt’n'Pippa

Rediscover: Mumbai Science

12 02 2011

Иконописикони цениAs you may have noticed phase02 hasn’t been active as usual the past few months. I deeply apologize for that! The good news is I’ve got some plans for phase02. This might be the last post before huge changes will find place. However this is not a regular post. This is the first “rediscover” post in many to come. Every week I’ll search for a track that has been released for a couple months or even years and we totally forgot about or didn’t receive the attention it deserved. This week it’s a bit of both.

I want to show you an amazing remix by Mumbai Science, which got overshadowed by a very impressive release of Alex Gopher a couple months back. Enjoy!

THE DIRT #38: TROY KURTZ & SWEET FA

07 20 2011

TK: My British pal SweetFA and myself have been given the honor to dish out to you the 38th installment of THE DIRT, and we couldn’t be giddier if we tried. You’ll find that I take a trip through history and shell out some of my all-time favorite garage/funkybass/dubstep tunes from the past that might have slipped under your guard, while my UK cohort gets you up to speed on the all the big house records that are just dying to become staples in your iTunes library. We hope you enjoy listening as much as we did compiling.

• Bran Van 3000 – Astounded (MJ Cole Mix)
MJ Cole has been one of my favorite producers ever since I first got into EDM. As a pioneer of of the 2-step and  UK garage scenes, he’s been putting out amazing records for well over a decade. This remix dates back to 2001, and I still regard it as one of the grooviest tunes in my collection.

• Lemonade – Lifted (Hackman Remix)
Riding on the coattails of MJ Cole comes the new generation of funky producers, and I rate Hackman as one of my favorite new artists. Last summer he burst onto the radar with his ‘More Than Ever‘ EP, and followed it up with his latest EP which came out this month called ‘Close‘, which I highly recommend.

• Joker & Jakes – 3k Lane (L-Vis 1990 Dubble Step Edit)
If you’ve recently caught the dubstep bug a la Skrillacks, then you might not have heard of the monumental smash that was ‘3k Lane‘. Prior to the era of ‘Scary Sprites’, tunes like this used to be the highlight of bass nights. Night Slugs hotshot L-Vis 1990 put out a few of these ‘Dubble Step Edits’ a few years ago that are way cool. Hunt for the other ones, you won’t be disappointed.

• A1 Bassline & Kavsrave – Lucky Charms
I’ve always loved tracks at the 130 bpm range that have a half-time dubstep bit to them. This track has been a staple in my bassy sets ever since it came out in ’09 and still sounds current. If you haven’t copped A1 Bassline’s ‘Shock Headed’ EP, do so immediately (Shock Headed is an 808 MONSTER).

• Zomby – Rumours & Revelations
I found this tune wedged at the end of Hervé’s ‘Ghetto Bass‘ comp and have been in love ever since. Zomby recently put out his second album called ‘Dedication‘ that is top notch.

• Skream – Rutten
I’ll close with one of my all-time favorite Skream joints. The combination of woodwinds + low-end sub-bass in this late-night serenade makes certain parts of my body tingle that I don’t need to expand upon. I also have to give a big congratulations to Oliver and his missus on their recent son!

TK – The Dirt #38 Part 1 Zip

FA: Striking a balance with Troy’s dutty selection, I’ve opted for the housey and techier stuff. It’s a selection of some of the freshest tunes out there, together with a few surprises from my personal stash! It goes without saying, all are tunes I’m digging a lot at the moment. Dance on, lads and ladies…

• Homework – Rally Racquet Club (Oliver $ Remix) [Beatport] √+
Kicking off with something easy: a nice tech-house groover from Oliver Dollar with some nifty phaser work.

• Ray Foxx – The Trumpeter (Original Mix) [Beatport] √+
This tune dropped on Defected last month and I can’t get enough of it. Solo trumpet cuts and sick percussion. Summery, feel good house vibes, and it’s a monster of a tune. Really big.

• Benzie – Homecoming (Zedex Data-Loss Remix)
Been giving Zedex’s new Zulu X-Ray EP play for the past few weeks, but decided to buck the trend and see what else they had to offer. The rhythm changes and synth work on this track are fire.

• Cirez D – The Tumble (Original Mix) [Beatport] √+
This tune by Eric Prydz’s Cirez D alias has been a set staple of mine for about 9 months. It features the nastiest rolling bassline I’ve heard to date. Heavy.

• Punks Jump Up – Chimes (Younger Than Me Remix) √+
I got sent the Younger Than Me remix of the new Punks Jump Up tune this week. Admittedly I wasn’t mad on it at first, but now I’m a fan – it’s a grower and well worthy of some Dirty action with it’s overdriven Italo bassline and use of cow-bells.

• Alex Gopher – Invasion (Etienne de Crecy Edit) [Beatport√+
If you haven’t cottoned on to it yet, be sure to check out Etienne de Crecy’s heavy edit of the new Alex Gopher track. It’s a banger for sure.

You Love Remixes. You Do.

07 11 2011

I need to get me one of these shirts! Happy Monday GDD™ people! After one serious bender of a weekend, I am back to the grind and ready to give you all some great tunes to start the week off right. Check out this 5 pack of remixes from some of the top artists in the game right now.

Light Year – Marcellus (Malente Remix) √+
Our buddies from Oz are coming out with a HUGE remix release this Friday, July 15th on Bang Gang Records. The package features remixes from Harvard Bass, Strip Steve, Alex Gopher, The Finger Prince, and of course Malente. Give this groovin’ House track the volume it deserves and head over to the brand new Light Year website for more info.

Noah and the Whale – Life Is Life (Yuksek Remix) √+
So what it’s a Monday. Turn that frown upside-down after listening to this pick-me-up of a track. Smiles and sun all around.

Chromeo – When The Night Falls (Hercules And Love Affair Remix)
I posted the Breakbot remix of this track last week which had the standard Disco feel to it. This rendition from Hercules And Love Affair throws in a pretty catchy synth lead in the mix. Give it a go.

Little Dragon – Ritual Union (Tensnake Remix) [Beatport]
The Swedish band, Little Dragon, released the EP for ‘Ritual Union’ last week on Peacefrog Records, featuring touch-ups from Tensnake, Maya Jane Coles, and Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Tensnake turns the tempo down in this remix to create a really great track. Grab Little Dragon’s full length album on July 26th.

Azari & III – Manic [The Finger Prince 'Static Situation' remix] by PurplePR
Great new remix from Bang Gang rep, The Finger Prince. Can’t wait for this release.

Amtrac Remixes

06 29 2011

Earlier this month Amtrac put out a rather large pack of free remixes. I have to admit when there’s a huge bulk of tunes, the ZIP/ folder lives on my destktop for a good while. In any case, I finally got around to checking them out and, of course, I was kicking myself for not listening sooner, as there was some serious heat among the bunch. Check my favorites below or grab the whole pack.

Amtrac – Love Party (Amtrac Vs. Alex Gopher)

Apparat – Ash/Black Veil (Amtrac Remix)

Little Comets – Joanna (Amtrac Remix)

McFadden & Whitehead – Ain’t no Stoppin Us Now (Amtrac & Derek Walin Remix)

Ten I See.

03 19 2010

So finals have ended for me this week, leaving one last quarter of my college career…kind of scary but also pretty liberating. Anyways, my spring break has commenced and I have ventured out to Tennessee to visit my family before I lose another ten years off of my life at WMC in Miami next week. Not really quite sure what to do out here in Memphis so I’ve been drinking and downloading heavily (always a good combo). So here are 10 (yes 10!) tracks that I have found to be personally appealing and I hope you can skip through airports to them like I did yesterday. Party on Garth.

Great choon…much better than the Zodiac Cartel remix I think.
I’ve been rocking my 3rd nut off to this. Reminds me of something Pendulum-esque.
Don’t be fooled by the slow opening. You know how naughty 16Bit is.
Great new electro from Nashville, TN. Cheers to Nashville Nights for these ones.
New track off of Mixmag‘s cover CD. He’s back. Finally.
2 good ones for all you Nu-Disco freaks out thurr.
Great minimal usage of the vocals in this one. Bravo.
Nice housey track out on the Culprit label. Like what those guys are doing.

BONUS!
Crookers, Yelle, and Junkie XL? c’mon maaaaan.

Hope you enjoy these, let me know which ones you like. See you in Miami!

GDD™ Quick Six w/ Alex Gopher.

03 11 2010

In the past week, I was given the privilege to have a few questions with French House DJ Alex Gopher about his upcoming 2CD release titled ‘My New Remixes’. His reworks range from artists like Shinichi Osawa, Air, and Kraftwerk, and his distinguished style shines through in each track. The digital release of the album will be March 16th, and this will be followed by Alex’s first North American tour in 10 years that will start this May. Be sure to pick up a copy on Beatport or iTunes next week when it drops and keep your eyes out for a tour date near you. Now, on to the quick six:
Gotta Dance Dirty™: First of all I just want to say thank you for taking the time for this interview I know you’re a busy man these days.
Alex Gopher: You are welcome!
GDD™: You are releasing a new double CD this month. What inspired you to choose to compile a remix album as opposed to producing originals?
AG: Well, I released a few EP’s in 2008 (Aurora vol 1&2, Belmondo EP, Handguns) which were quite successful in the clubs so after that came a lot of requests for remixes. And remixing is something I really love, and it puts less pressure on yourself than when you make your own tracks. So I did plenty of them these last two years, and it was important for me to produce a conclusion with this compilation to say, “Here is what I did musically these last two years.”
GDD™: Which remix would you say is your favorite to play in a set?
AG: The remix I did for Shinichi Osawa “Push”. I’ve played it in all my sets since I did it two years ago.
GDD™: Where do you see your sound going? Do you think that it will evolve as news sounds are invented/reinvented?
AG: My sound is very different when I do a track for clubs or for album or listening. But I’m very pleased when I do a club track that can be listened to at home. Remixes let me try new directions in my sound, things that I wouldn’t do in my own productions. It’s like a laboratory of research, afterwards I can use it in my own tracks. That’s why remixes are often really fresh & risky. After a few years of producing tracks quite noisy & distorted, I’m back to a more mellow sound, back to something more late 90′s. That’s for the production, because my DJ sets are still rough & dirty! (GDD™ approves this message)
GDD™: What festival are you most looking forward to this spring? Will you be making it out to WMC in Miami this year?
AG: No, I won’t be at WMC. We are working on the summer tour these days. As a listener, festivals are great, but as a DJ, clubs are much better!
GDD™: What artists do you listen to in your downtime?
AG: These days I’m listening to Vampire Weekend, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Julian Casablancas. For real downtime, Nick Drake is my favorite.
GDD™: Who were your top 3 favorite artists of 2009?
GDD™: Thanks so much again for taking the time Alex. We at GDD™ definitely appreciate it and hope your release and tour go very well.
AG: Thanks a lot!
Here’s a couple low quality tracks from the album that I’ve enjoyed recently:
