Dr. Dre x Eminem x Jay Z x 50 Cent x Nas stream

Two new Dre & Em collabs have surfaced the net. The first, “Syllables,” features an all star cast that includes 50 Cent, Jay-Z, Cashis and Stat Quo, and confronts the growing trend of r&b fused rap that focuses on the production more than the lyrics. Em raps about how people only remember the chorus (“cause the chorus repeats the same four words for us”) than mockingly sings “Shorty I love you, will you love me too?” It’s a refreshing reminder of Em’s wittier pre-Relapse days. Hova’s lyrics are quite memorable as well. The second is a revamped version of last year’s “Topless,” which features Nas, and Em rather than T.I. Both house downtempo piano beats, the latter definitely more fitting as a Dre track. Whether either of them will appear on Dre’s infinitely prolonged Detox appears to be mystery…. hopefully we shall find out soon enough. Listen to “Syllables” and “Topless” below:

Manchester Orchestra Live at The Pheonix

The house lights shoot to black, and when the stage lights replace them, the kinetic ball of energy known as Manchester Orchestra have taken the stage. Frontman Andy Hull, all hair and plaid, leads the audio assault, as he starts the set out with a feverish rendition of You My Pride And Me that sets the table for what’s to come.

Manchester Orchestra – Hull, guitarist Robert McDowell, bass player Jonathan Corley, drummer Len Clark and multi-instrumentalist Chris Freeman – are two official full lengths, (‘06’s I’m Like A Virgin Losing A Child and ‘09’s Mean Everything To Nothing) into a career that is already characterized by deep lyrics, genre bending tracks and an innovative style that most young bands would kill for.

The room quiets, save for the few people who feel the need to call out song names as if it’s going to make a difference to the set list, when Hull’s high warble emerges again, “I felt a black man in my teeth; what a way, Jesus is coming; he acts my age and always looks the same.” The rest of the band has joined in and their off again, rocking through one of their bouncier songs, which lyrically speaking, has Jesus painted all over it, a common theme in a lot of MO lyrics, which is natural considering Hull himself is a son of a preacher man. After wailing there way through In My Teeth they slam the crowd with a wall of sound that manages to hit from every direction all at once when they bring the incredible and frenetic Shake It out, to a crowd all too happy to sing along to every word.

The crowd becomes even more endeared to the Atlanta Georgia band when Hull tells them that he lived for seven years in the Toronto Suburb of Richmond Hill, and clamed “….i used to watch dirty movies late at night on the New VR, just like all of you.” Truth or fiction? Not to sure, but the man did mention The New VR, so little other proof is needed.

The full on audio assault continues My Friend Marcus, a track that really hammer home, just how honed the band is. Every note, every little up and down of the lyrics comes across as spot on, right down the bells, and other sounds coming from the diverse pallet of instruments that surround Freeman on the front part of stage left. The complete sound of the band is phenomenal but as they transition into the amazing Wolves At Night, it continues to become more clear that Manchester Orchestra is Hull’s band, as everyone else seems to fall back a bit and allow him the run of the stage.

Hull informs the audience that they will have a new album coming out soon, and then treats them to a new song, that seems to pick up right where the songs on Mean Everything To Nothing left off, and will continue the trend of MO being the hardest soft band in music today.

The tightness continues as they make their way through Colly Strings, Everything to Nothing, The River, The Only One and then they were joined by three more drummers, brining the total to five for and insane rendition of Where Have You Been that was very reminiscent of the more recent Brand New live shows, and erupted into a percussive orgasm.

Then came the track 50 Cent which is developing a cult following all it’s own, and shows the lighter side of Hull’s personality, which only shines through during other, small, non-musical moments throughout the show.

Hull rhymes off an interesting list of Canadian psedo-sports celebrities including Brett Hull who is actually American, Owen Hart, aww, and Brett Hart, who got a loud cheer, before deciding to sing a song he “….sang every morning for seven years.” This led into a stirring rendition of the world’s most beautiful national anthem, O Canada, complete with a full group sing along, and Hull accentuating little notes here and there with Hendrix style guitar work.

The show came to an end with the song I’ve Got Friends, a song that continued the showcase of intense musicianship and attention detail and made for an incredible closer to a phenominal show, and proved that not only are Manchester Orchestra definitely the best band in the world that most people have never heard of, but they definitely do have friends, not only in all the right places, but in pretty much every place they decide to play music.

Many Men by Gonzales

02 01 2010

Teki hit us up with a little something to make us smile but we’ll let him do the talking.

“Here’s a little gift from my friend Gonzales (who as some of you may know is currently wrapping up his next album produced by none other than Boys Noize). It’s some sort of piano remix of the old 50 cent hit “Many Men”. It’s taken from his piano mixtape “Pianist’s Envy” dropping soon on the interwebs, on which he plays piano over rap instrumentals, remixes rap acapellas with piano on top, and re-arranges house songs piano/orchestra style, it’s pretty unique and amazing. Here’s a word about it from the maestro himself

“Chilly Gonzales presents the first-ever piano mixtape “Pianist’s Envy”. You know those rap beats and electro songs with almost nothing in them? “Tipsy”, “Grindin’”, “A Milli”, “Rollin’ and Scratchin’”, “Single Ladies”? Chilly goes all Liberace on these beats with his piano and his orchestra. Claude Von Stroke, 50 Cent, Kelly Clarkson, Rocky Balboa and Gonzo himself all make cameos. Dropping mid-February 2010 via chillygonzales.com.”

J-Son – Head In the Sky

10 17 2009

More new stuff from Swedish rappers!

J-son and Same Blood is doing it big time with this release! The track “Head In the Sky” is part of the album “Never Half Stepping” that is released on November 26th.

J-Son has previously done collabs with Malmös finest Lazee as well as big time Americans like 50 Cent on the track “Extacy” and with Lil Wayne on “Loser”. Here is tells us to focus on the inside and not on the bling we carry!

I really enjoy this track but I kinda wish that he put in some more of those ravey trance pads that we get in the beginning ;) Maybe we could get Dre Skull on the refix.

I am really excited to tell you that J-Son is coming to Malmö on October 28th for a performance at Smuts!
