Winnie’s Top Albums Of 2010
12 31 2010

Here are our faves of 2010. IT WAS A GOOD YEAR ya?
Let us know yrs / wut we missed…
20.Crystal Castles “Crystal Castles II”

Still love you Crystie Castles.
19. Four Tet “There is Love Inside You”

Bleep beep herp derp. For what ever reason I always link this album with the Caribou album. They came out around the same time and both artists have both been ahead of their time coming perfectly into fruition in 2010. The prefect blend of lofi organic samples and dance’y beats
18. Javelin “No Mas”

Kinda reminds me of The Avalanches but way less annoying, maybe a dash of early cut copy too and some dj shadow. It makes me feel like im eating cotton candy.
Javelin – Vibrationz
17. How To Dress Well “Love Remains”

“Love Remains” sounds like it was recorded in the middle of the night underneath the bed to not wake sleeping parents upstairs. Faint Whisper’y threads of 90′s rnb-esque hooks over lofi riddims.
How To Dress Well – Mr. By & By
16. Drums (self titled)

Surfy / maybe a little bit of the Cure / the new romantics kinda sound. Drums opened for Surfer Blood at the Bilty and were by far the better act + the lead singers dancing is pretty great.
15. Earl Sweatshirt “EARL”

Free Earl. 16 year old from Cali. His Mom sent him off to boarding school after she heard this.
Earl Sweatshirt – Couch Featuring Ace Creator
14. Diamond Rings “Special Affections”

Epic pop anthems crafted on garage band.
Diamond Rings – Something Else
13. Caribou “Swim”

This album feels like it is tapping into old school house / rave music and makes me want to lose my shit.
Caribou – Odessa
12. Yeasayer “Odd Blood”

This was definately one of the songs of the year and one of those albums people who think about music too much start to hate after a while for being too poppy / accessible.
11. El Guincho “Pop Negro”

Can’t get enough of this Spanish isht. Oh and the music video… thank you for that.
10. Salem “King Night”

Rape Gaze / witch house #prayforjack. Lets get frickin dark.
9 Kanye “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy”

Kanye I forgive you for being a douchebag.
Kanye West – Lost In The World (feat. Bon Iver)
8. Harlem “Hippies”

Thissss
7.Surfer Blood “Astrocoast”

Yeah it’s super poppy and most people are over it because it came out at the start of the year or something. I say it rules. There was a reason it was one of the most anticipated albums of 2009 and it didn’t let down.
6. PS I love You “Meet Me At The Muster Station”

From Kingston Ontario. Stadium sized hooks / rock anthems.
5. Black Keys “Brothers”

There was a reason why Black Keys tickets were being scalped for $200 during their last visit to town and this is it.
4. Twin Shadow “Forget”

This album is pure sex. A little splash of Morissey / The Cure and some serious hits.
Twin Shadow – When Were Dancing
3. Arcade Fire “The Suburbs”

The Arcade Fires killed it this year. Their live show might be one of the best shows ive ever seen. This “concept” album is epic, full of solid hits that flow so seamlessly into one another.
2. LCD Soundsystem “This Is Really Happening”

Murph bro. I love you. Pls do not let this be the last Lcd Album. You never let me down. Yr like a role model and stuff. When ever I played this album out djing pretty much every time some1 would come and ask what it was. Oh and not to nerd out but the mixing on this album is really bold and amazing too. It pretty much deserves it’s own award. The way that synth comes in on “Dance YrSelf Clean” a minute and a half in or whatever it is. omigowd. I could go on….
Lcd Soundsystem – You Wanted A Hit
1. Best Coast – “Crazy For You”

Bethanies, sometimes people criticize your music and say it sounds real needy, all your songs are about being unhappy without boys ect ect. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being needy. Feminsts and uptight a-holes who are uncomfortable with weakness r teh worst and are the actual weak ones. Sometimes I feel needy, then I play this album and feel better.

Massive Attack - Heliogoland (Virgin)
released: February 8, 2010
Seemingly oft-forgot as a release of this year, being that a super early leak in late late '09 caused the Bristol duo to push up the official outing of Heligoland, Massive Attack's fifth studio album sat sweetly amongst my most played. With a generous serving of guest vocalists, names like Damon Albarn and Horace Andy strengthened this disc, but it's Mazzy Star's sweetie, Hope Sandoval, who comes out swinging on the super sensual and album standout track, Paradise Circus. This album would rank higher, if every track on the release was that song. On repeat.
Big Boi - Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty (Purple Ribbon / Def Jam)
released: July 5, 2010
It's almost impossible to believe that this is Big Boi's first solo offering. After a successful run of releases with Outkast, the ATLien finally got his shit together (the debut was promised for many a year) and threw out a bundle of seeds that blossomed into a garden of great rap tracks. Corralling a number of his closest friends (and even some new ones like Yealwolf) Boi done did the damn thing with a solid and slick flow that won't soon move off our most played / recently loved lists. Boo, I got a back up plan to the back up plan to back up my back up plan. Wordsmithing at its finest.
Dominique Young Unique - Domination (ArtJam Records)
released: June 10, 2010
Shut up and listen. That's what Dominique Young Unique implores you to do. Also, that's precisely the phrase I'm spitting at you in the event you say "oh hell naw, how dare you include a free mixtape on your be[a]st albums list!" Well guess what: Domination is in part better than most full lengths put out this year, and in whole, one of the finest flowing selections from a more than unknown we've heard in too long. She's a "gangster hard hitter out of 8 - 1 - 3" and she might just accomplish the world over like the title implies. Total domination at the tender age of 19.
Kelis - Flesh Tone (will.i.am music / Interscope)
released: May 14, 2010
Flesh Tone serves as Kelis' "enough is enough is enough, I will survive, it's (not) raining men" collection of anthemic works. And while it's not disco, it IS dance... and that's precisely what the husky honey demands you do via her fifth studio recording. Snagging production work from Jean Baptiste, David Guetta and Benny Benassi amongst others, the former rap-sing-song artist went through a label drop, divorce and dietary specialist classes (she's a chef y'all!) and came out on the other side with her truest tones yet. Emancipate yourself, indeed!
Trentemøller - Into the Great Wide Yonder (In My Room)
released: May 28, 2010
If every song recorded this year (and I mean EVERY song that was created, produced, put out, sing, sang and sung, etc...) sounded like Trentemøller's ...Even Though You're With Another Girl, I would have been crying nonstop for 365 straight days. And then probably some more. But this doesn't mean that the Portishead-esque single carries and bears all the weight of the Danish musician. Equally pleasing cuts like Silver Surfer, Ghost Rider, Go! and Shades of Marble anchor a seamless wall of sound from the opening sounds to the closing choruses of his sophomore offering.
ceo - White Magic (Modular)
released: July 2, 2010
It really should be no surprise that a Swede pops up on my list of BE[a]ST Albums, considering my penchant for all things Scandinavian and sugary sweet. Enter ceo, with his debut album, White Magic, and while we already knjow and love Eric Berglund (formerly of The Tough Alliance) and his tall body of work, this solo effort whisked us away to a land of pillow fights and playful arrangements, all the while maintinaing a modern day relevance and sustainability. Singles such as come with me and illuminata are immediate album standouts, but it's the happy handclappers like love and do what you will that remain my most oft-repeated. Queue applause now.
The Hundred in the Hands - The Hundred in the Hands (Warp)
released: September 21, 2010
You might cry foul or even go so far as to call me a beast of a biased nature since Eleanore and Jason have oft been spotted sounding off on my radio show, or even found themselves on the receiving end of a rad amount of praise, but when talking about one of my justifiably most-played, praised and self-popularized releases of the year, it's without a shred of doubt The Hundred in the Hands' freshman self-titled disc that wins out. The Warp signees compile 11 tracks ranging from pop to new wave, dark disco and goth dance. This solid effort is a seamless listen from start to finish, whether used as filler or front of house music, and the break that hits at the 3:05 mark of lead track Young Aren't Young is enough to make you want to keep hitting repeat.
Robyn - Body Talk (Cherrytree / Interscope)
released: June 14, September 6 and November 22, 2010
One of our most lauded and loved beasts through the course of the year was none other than Robyn, and with every good reason. She talked, not only with her body, but with her unique release schedule, in which 2 smaller "EPs" lead to the final chapter in a terrificly trifectal tour of tunes. Each compilation had it's powerful and passionate moments, from the emotionally-destructive and equally beautiful Dancing On My Own, to singles like Hang With Me and Indestructible, other cuts proved just as poignant without the official stamps on 'em (see: None of Dem and Don't Fucking Tell Me What to Do). Overall, one of the most brilliant moves from one of modern music's brightest stars.
Crystal Castles - Crystal Castles II (Fiction Records)
released: April 23, 2010
Don't confuse this release with the one of the same name as debuted by Crystal Castles two years ago. Sure it's all a bit head-scratching, what with a pair of discs under identical monikers being offered up, but don't mistake one for the other. The sophomore album from the Canadian duo soars much higher, louder and intrinsically more powerful than the freshman first. From the immediately affecting sounds of Baptism, to the, dare we say it, sexy and sultry songs like Celestica, Suffocation and Pap Smear, this release is one you can easily thrash out or make out to. Believe me. I've done both and each experience ended with the most smashing and beastly of results.
Sleigh Bells - Treats (Mom + Pop Recordings / N.E.E.T.)
released: May 11, 2010
11 tracks in 32 minutes and fight music you can dance to. Enough said.

Mightyfools American Mixtape
12 07 2010
Who am I: This duo is made up of Andy Samin and Jelle Keizer who met each other for the first time in an empty club. Instantly melding their collective musical backgrounds together it made complete sense to join forces and form what is now known as… Mightyfools!
currently about to kick off a small american tour and supporting Designers Drugs in the NYC; these guys have released a mixtape in celebration. this mixtape in summary – Mightyfools don’t let the beat drop.

10 Girls – Broken Dreams Club
More earnest pop gems from Girls: Broken Dreams Club is honest and heart-wrenching and revelatory in a way that you could only expect from these two. A very natural extension of Album, but also a tremendous step up, punctuated by tighter production and sonic explorations that exude a well-earned confidence. “Substance” charms with help from Dee Dee of Dum Dum Girls, and “Carolina” — a jam we’ve had in our head for roughly two years — rounds things out in epic fashion.
mp3:
Girls :: Heartbreaker
__________
09 White Denim – Last Day of Summer
With the the looser, “fresh and casual” approach (their words) that White Denim takes on Last Day of Summer, the band comes closer than ever to capturing the preternatural chemistry and seemingly effortless shapeshifting flow they consistently display in their live shows. Not bad for what essentially amounts to a stopgap / “little summer retreat” while we wait for the band’s proper third full-length. Download it for whatever you’d like to pay here.
mp3:
White Denim :: Some Wild Going Outward
__________
08 Games – That We Can Play
In which ’80s homage/nostalgia is elevated to instant classic status by masterful pop deconstruction — and subsequent magical reconstruction — from Oneohtrix Point Never’s Daniel Lopatin and Tigercity’s Joel Ford. Granted, the run time here is slight, but the EP’s brevity works in its favor, as there’s not a wasted second on this thing. Also featuring one of the best songs of 2010, the unexpected “Cruel Summer“-recalling pop hit “Strawberry Skies,” which features vocals from Laurel Halo.
mp3:
Games :: Midi Drift
__________
07 Lower Dens – Twin-Hand Movement
Like most of the uniformly stellar (and underrated) output from Texan Jana Hunter, the self-titled debut from her new band Lower Dens is understated and unassuming, almost to a fault. But repeat listens reveal gorgeous waves of ringing, shimmering “post punk drone pop,” bolstered by Hunter’s emotive, vaguely androgynous vocals and a tangible, increasingly rare cohesiveness for such a young band. This one crept up on us, and cliched as it may sound, it’s fair to say that the whole here far exceeds the sum of its parts.
mp3:
Lower Dens :: Tea Lights
Lower Dens :: Hospice Gates
__________
06 Big Boi – Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty
The highly anticipated, perpetually delayed solo joint from one of our favorite rappers is a triumphant return on all fronts. Despite a few still-kind-of-awesome missteps — who invited Vonnegutt? — Big Boi’s classic, ridiculously dexterous flow and the record’s always inspired, deliriously out-there production cement this as the most fun (and funkiest) thing released in 2010. Best driving music of the year, too.
__________
05 Joanna Newsom – Have One on Me
There’s no question we fell in love with the more immediate songs on Have One On Me upon first listen, although like most, we initially found the record as a whole kind of daunting and impenetrable. But as you witness Newsom bring these songs to life, you’re forcefully reminded of her very literally prodigious and virtuosic ability as a musician, songwriter, and lyricist, which only reaffirms how graceful and delicate and achingly beautiful these subtly complex compositions are. Revisit this one, it wears in like an old friend.
__________
04 James Blake – CMYK / Klavierwerke
Ghostly, living/breathing atmospherics from London’s James Blake, who, in CMYK + Klavierwerke, has created two of the year’s most groundbreaking releases. Blake’s Burial-esque manipulation of vocals and unique and imaginative use of space is incredibly soul-stirring and affecting in ways that are unlike anything I’ve ever heard. Nowhere is this more evident than on the mournful, fairly mindblowing “I Only Know (What I Know Now),” which sounds like being born/dying, or as P4k’s David Bevan put it, “like infinity trapped inside of five minutes.”

James Blake :: CMYK
James Blake :: I Only Know (What I Know Now)
__________
03 Shabazz Palaces – Shabazz Palaces / Of Light
Originally self-released at the end of ‘09 and re-released by Sub Pop last month, Seattle’s Shabazz Palaces thrillingly juxtapose the platinum voice and conscious/menacing lyrics of Palaceer Lazaro — aka anti-Kanye Ishmael Butler of Digable Planets — with bumping, futuristic Brainfeeder-level beats to create the most adventurous and inventive hip-hop release of the year. Look for a full-length in early 2011.
Shabazz Palaces :: Blastit…

02 Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti – Before Today
EXCLUSIVE: we asked Carles to write a blurb for us about Ariel Pink’s brilliant Before Today, which was recorded in a real studio:
“Alas! The brilliant lofi texturewave artist Ariel Pink has finally done it, leaving many of us wondering: “What did music sound like Before Today?” which is coincidentally the title of his gamechanging 2010 release with his band of lofi talismans known simply as the Haunted Graffiti. Merging his ambient bedroom recording artist textures with the modern textures and professionalism of the modern recording vibes required for ‘mainstream indie coverage’, Ariel Pink has emerged from the shadowy textures of yesteryear and has evolved into a modern indie star. It seems as if perhaps the world has finally caught up with Ariel Rosenberg, and our ears are finally ready for his textures. “Before Today” is history, while the future is a mystery but today is a gift which belongs to Ariel Pink.”

01 Beach House – Teen Dream
The most elegant, visceral, sensual release of the year comes from one of our favorite bands in the history of this blog. Teen Dream was born of a fully evolved vision and the indefatigable connection between Alex Scally and Victoria Legrand, whose voice is quickly becoming an iconic one. And, it has the best songs.

Deadmau5 4X4=12
11 16 2010
December will herald the release of Deadmau5 3rd album titled ’4×4=12′. Joel Zimmerman like Madonna evolves his sound to adapt with the trend yet, staying within minimal and maximal house music. This album heralds to be one that has a combination of piano, synth melody, ridiculous buildup, and filthy drops. (mmmm just the way i like it) but what comes with evolution does come change. this album will herald Deadmau5′s dip into the dubstep genre with ‘One Trick Pony’. If I were to comment on a personal note, this song is combining his current existing influences of house and choice of vocalist with the dirtiness of an underlaying grimey wobble. a blend that essentially makes what i would consider to be mainstream dubstep which is easy for the masses to accept. Overall, its exciting to see what is in stall for this album. If you cannot wait for the release date here are some youtube music clips of every song to wet your appetite!

Beach Fossils Tour
07 03 2010

I’m pretty excited for this one. Beach Fossils is a band out of Brooklyn currently touring the United States. They’ll be in our fine city next weekend for West Fest in the Ukrainian Village. The following day, they’ll be playing a set at Empty Bottle with Small Black. Hope to see you there. Here’s two off of their great self-titled full length, Beach Fossils, I’ve been digging.
