January Picks

01 04 2011

Redthreat Recommends: January

Young Jesus // 01.05 // Schubas

Fresh off their Route 66 Red Bull tour. Be sure to catch one of Chicago’s most promising up & coming indie groups while they’re back in town.

MP3: Young Jesus – October

Weezer // 01.07 // Aragon Ballroom

Weezer will be in town two consecutive nights covering both their Blue Album & Pinkerton. Tickets are long-gone, and not selling for low prices on craigslist.

MP3: Weezer – Only In Dreams

Ghetto Division // 01.07 // Lincoln Hall

Southside’s runnin’ game up North these days. Anything Mica puts together gets my immediate rubber-stamp, as far as I’m concerned. Dance shoes.

MP3: Rampage + Nader – Get Up

Secret Colours // 01.08 // Subterranean

Their title track off the In The Absence single has psychedellia in all the right places. Here’s another Chicago indie group getting it right.

MP3: Secret Colours – In The Absence

Derrick Carter // 01.08 // Smartbar

Y’all know the name. That, or you have some serious history lessons in order. Chicago’s king of house is playing on the 8th at Smartbar.

MP3: Royksopp – So Easy (Derrick Carter Remix)

The Magic Kids // 01.12 // Schubas

Really impressive at Pitchfork. Here’s another indie group that had a very strong 2k10, both in studio and on tour. Snag Memphis if you haven’t yet.

MP3: The Magic Kids – Hey Boy

The Helio Sequence // 01.12 // Lincoln Hall

I’m excited to see California Wives and Houses open it all up . This would probably be my pick for best indie lineup for the month. Strong, start to finish.

MP3: The Helio Sequence – Converter

Twin Shadow // 01.14 // Schubas

Didn’t catch them back in November, and have been regretting it since. Forget is easily one of my fav albums of last year. And I do love this remix..

MP3: Twin Shadow – Castles In The Snow (Com Truise Remix)

Pezzner // 01.14 // TBA

Still not sure where it’s gonna be, but you can get tickets already! What Have I Done is rock solid techno. Check Resident Advisor for updates.

YOUTUBE: Pezzner – Brooklyn New York (Justin Martin Remix)

Handsome Furs // 01.15 // Lincoln Hall

I just recently discovered Handsome Furs’ excellent Face Control release. Madison’s Jaill opening it all up only sweetens the deal for me, really.

MP3: Handsome Furs – Evangeline

Tanlines // 01.15 // Metro

Oh lord I’m ready for this. Tanlines easily made it to my year-end list with their Settings release that is still on heavy rotation around here.

MP3: Tanlines – Iced Coffee (Club Mix)

Free Energy // 01.20 // Double Door

Free Energy had about as good a 2010 as a band can have. I still love Stuck On Nothing, and saw them steal the show at Metro a few months back.

MP3: Free Energy – Free Energy

Nick Curly // 01.21 // Smartbar

This takes the prize for best techno gig that Chicago has to offer this month. Hands-down. Seems like I’ve been waiting forever for a Nick Curly set.

MP3: Thordoris Traintafillou – Suspicious Behavior (Nick Curly Remix)

California Wives // 01.28 // Subterranean

Definitely a band that seems to be harnessing it’s buzz since Fall. Clean sound. I’ve been hearing good things about Art Majors, their openers, as well.

MP3: California Wives – Guilt

Tapes ‘n Tapes // 01.29 // Lincoln Hall

I’m excited for what Tapes ‘n Tapes has to offer us this year. Here is a tiny glimpse, titled “Freak Out” that ought to do the trick for now.

MP3: Tapes ‘N Tapes – Freak Out

This IS A Best Of Post

12 31 2009

But not a very researched one. Actually, that’s a lie. For the last two months when I wasn’t bombarded with homework, I was trying to download EVERY ALBUM I MISSED LAST YEAR. The results? Don’t ever try to do that…
MODERAT
I have one fav. album from last year. MODERATMODERAT (or would you write it MODERATS/T?) on BPitch CONTROL from Germany. It’s got just the right amount of thump blended seamlessly amongst the sappy. I suggest the CD version over the vinyl because the vinyl doesn’t include BEATS WAY SICK featuring BUSDRIVER (On a side note, this years album JHELLI BEAM by BUSDRIVER didn’t quite do it for me). MODERAT are a collaboration between APPARAT & MODESELEKTOR.

The I wish all at the staff at MANALOGUE the best of luck in the New Year and to all the people out there behind the screen…keep listening.

Honourable Mentions:
Applescal — A Slave’s Commitment [Traum Schallplatten]
The Field — Yesterday & Today [Kompakt]
Kap Bambino — Blacklist [Because Music]
Nathan Fake — Hard Islands [Border Community]
Telefon Tel Aviv — Immolate Yourself [BPitch Control]
Zombie Nation — Zombielicious [UKW]
