INTRODUCING: BEYOND GOLD.

05 31 2011
It's been an exciting year of new ventures for us here at Neon Gold, but we're not about to stop now. First came Popshop, bringing you the best new pop music the world has to offer the first Thursday of every month in the heart of the LES. Then there was our publishing joint venture* with Warner/Chappell, which resulted in the signing of Alex Winston as our first foray into the pub world. And up next, we're very pleased to announce a brand new online magazine called Beyond Gold, coming later this month with a launch party June 14th at Tammany Hall, featuring Grouplove, 1, 2, 3, Captain Cuts and more. With a rotating staff of contributors, Beyond Gold will be bringing you the best the world has to offer in fashion, design, art, music, culture and more, an online lifestyle magazine weaving together everything we love that falls just beyond the realm of Neon Gold. We'll have more on Beyond Gold as we get closer to the June 14th launch, but for now it's a brilliant excuse to throw an amazing launch party with our dear friends Grouplove and 1, 2, 3 playing live, plus The Knocks, Xaphoon Jones and the NYC debut of Captain Cuts - whose remix of "Colours" is still the best song (remix or otherwise) we've heard this year - on the decks. It's one of the best lineups we've ever had the pleasure of assembling for a show, and at the low low price of $5 you really have no business being anywhere else on the 14th. And as if the bands and price tag weren't appealing enough, we've also got Absolut and Bomb Lager on board providing complimentary vodka and beer for the first hour from 7-8pm. You down? Yeah, we thought so. Tickets are available HERE, but with so much bang for so little buck, you're gonna want to move fast on these. Set times and mp3s below, get involved New York.07:00pm: The Knocks (DJ) // DOWNLOAD: "Pumped Up Kicks" (The Knocks Remix) 08:30pm: 1, 2, 3 (LIVE) // DOWNLOAD: "Work" 09:30pm: Grouplove (LIVE) // DOWNLOAD: "Colours" 10:15pm: Xaphoon Jones (DJ) // DOWNLOAD: "The Jackson Pit"11:00pm: Captain Cuts (DJ) // DOWNLOAD: "Colours" (Captain Cuts Remix) And then here's the video for Grouplove's brand new single "Itchin' On A Photograph", just because we haven't posted it yet and we love them more than we love ourselves. *just to clarify, our publishing JV is also called Beyond Gold, and though the magazine and pub imprint aren't directly related, they're not entirely unrelated either. if anything it's just confusion for confusion's sake, smoke and mirrors y'all.

MP3: 1,2,3 – “Work”

05 03 2011

We’ve been following Pittsburgh’s 1,2,3 for quite a while now, as they’ve released jam after tantalizing jam (“Riding Coach,” “Heat Lightning”) whether as a free download or in vinyl form. It’s been confirmed that the trio are putting out their debut record New Heaven late next month, and have now released a new song that will appear on it.

According to frontman Nic Synder’s recent interview with Spinner, “Work” is a blue-collar anthem for his fellow people of Pittsburgh: “I painted houses for three years for a small crew that my friend ran. He’s incidentally in jail now because he had a little side action, but, he told me I should write a working class anthem. I said I didn’t know if I could. I still don’t know, but, I wrote this song anyway.” “Work” is a jangly, fuzzy guitar pop ditty, packed with soaring melodies and tambourine chops. Download it below; New Heaven comes out June 21st via Frenchkiss.

1,2,3 – “Heat Lightning”

03 28 2011

No, this is not a remake of “Grease Lightning.” If you recall, we’ve posted a few tracks from Pittsburgh’s own 1,2,3, most recently the first track from their forthcoming debut proper, “Riding Coach.” The duo of Nic Synder and Josh Sickels have just put out a new track called, “Heat Lightning” which is for the most part, a chilled out lo-fi jam, though it does get heavy halfway through, seemingly out of nowhere. There is a wad of glam rock appeal in this, just from the sensual vocals alone, and the cooling whistles, distant synths and acoustic chords make it another impressive cut from the young band. Check it out below:

MP3: 1,2,3 Riding Coach mp3

Last year, we posted two tracks from Pittsburgh’s 1,2,3 and had claimed “these guys are going places,” much like Freelance Whales. Now, exactly one year later, they’ve signed to Frenchkiss Records (the same label Freelance Whales are on!), and are reportedly putting out their debut sometime this year. We’ve just received the first glimpse of said debut with “Riding Coach,” a dreamy, electric guitar driven affair that’s got a bit of a hip hop beat to it, matched with soothing falsettos and hazy synths. Kind of sounds like Foster The People but calmer, and more organic. Told you these guys were going places, download below and see for yourself.

UNDERTAKER TAKE ME UNDER.

02 14 2010
We've been pretty Neon Gold-centric on the blog as of late, but guess what? There's some pretty good music happening beyond the realm of all things neon and gold in 2010, and one such thing is Pittsburgh's 1,2,3. They're hardly our usual "thing" per se, but their debut anthem "Confetti" is all kinds of amazing. Recognize.
