A night with Giorgio Moroder

05 21 2013

Property of Gotta Dance Dirty

Last night, for the very first time, Disco legend and arguably the father of modern dance music, Giorgio Moroder, performed at the Output club in Brooklyn for the Red Bull Music Academy. Best known for his work with Donna Summer, Freddie Mercury, David Bowie and Daft Punk and scores for Scarface and Flashdance, Moroder drew hundreds out to BK for this landmark performance…and we were one of the lucky few who got to witness it first hand!

Francois K, renowned DJ in his own right, began the epic night with a speech: “Good Evening everybody, great set by T. Williams! Welcome to Deep Space. I would really like to thank Output for accommodating this landmark, historical show where, obviously, a lot more people wanted to come. So here’s one thing, I’ve got you here..and you’re not waiting for me to start playing…I know what you are here for… (Cheers from the crowd) But since I’ve got you guys as a captive audience…I figured I might as well play stuff that I really like! Instead of the generic electronic post-millennial crap, that goes in one ear and out the other…so we are going to introduce a legendary show with something you are really going to remember..so in that spirit we are going to get it happening, and here it is for you!”

Before immediately diving into Daft Punk’s new “Give Life Back to Music” (and yes, people were actually dancing like that ^). Francois K went on to entertain the eagerly awaiting crowd with other dope tracks like the Skreamix of Duke Dumont’s “Need U 100%,” “Beat The Street” by Sharon Redd, and “Atlantic” By Luca Bacchetti.

Finally, the moment of truth came and the crowd erupted as a little old man entered the booth. Stepping up to the mic, after the applause, we hear the  awesome and memorable vocoded voice of Giorgio Moroder booming over the speakers. Hard to tell exactly what he was saying  (as we’ve experienced before with DP and Pharell’s “Rub A Mexican Monkey”) but if I were to guess it was “Good evening ladies and gentleman…I am Giorgio Moroder. I am so happy to be here with yoooouuuuuuu. Let’s have a nice eveninggg. This is my friennnnnd and musical directorrrrrr, Chris. Ok, Chris, lets do ittttttt!

Then, jumping into live riffs and synths played via a modified DJ set up of pioneer decks, what appeared to be a 16 key piano for live synths, a launchpad and the vocoder. His intro soon gave way to his classic collaboration with Munich Machine “In Love With Love,” with Moroder singing live, soon followed by “Lost Angeles.”

The next hour was an amazing disco whirlwind of epic proportions. Several artists and indsutry tastemakers like Benni Benassi, Danny Tenaglia, Chris Liebing, Drop The Lime, Sean Glass, Alex English, Star Eyes and others were in attendance to pay homage to the disco great.  I could have easily been in a classic 70′s disco dancing until dawn, all that was missing were mustaches, platform boots and sequins. Moroder continued to drop some of his most famous tracks (with the assistance of Chris Cox of thunderpuss) including “From Here To Eternity,”  His newest track “Racer,” “I Love to Love You Baby,” “Bad Girls,” “Hot Stuff,” “On The Radio” and “I Feel Love” with Donna Summer, “Jump The Gun” with The Three Degrees, “Beat the Clock” with Sparks, “I Wanna Rock You,” and  ”Chase.”

And he couldn’t have ended the night more perfectly. Cutting the music, he re-told his biography in the his signature accent, now made immortal by Daft Punk in “Giorgio by Moroder” before cutting to the hard synths that made that track my favorite of Random Access Memories. An insane, historic night that will not soon be forgotten in my book!

Coyote Kisses, the florida based “space punk” duo, are back with Thundercolor, a 4 track EP that dropped last week! The EP is their most ambitious work yet, featuring a variety of sounds from the mellow and appropriately named “Diving at Night,” to the shimmery yet dubby “Stay With You,” the funky electro-country vibe of “This is How You Know” and the sublime melodic intensity of “Changing Guard.” Definitely worth a listen…and make sure to grab the free download of “Changing Guard” from their facebook!

[Review] Kastle Live at 285 Kent

05 09 2013

Property of Gotta Dance Dirty

This month Kastle has been on his first ever live tour to support his recent album of the same name, out on Symbols a few weeks ago. I was so excited to see what he could bring to the live sphere that I just had to get in on the action at 285 Kent last friday! Check what I though after the jump!

Mixing up different elements off his album, Kastle’s set can only be described as a beautiful combination of sexy dub, future trap and sublime beats.

Combine the chill yet danceable vibes of his remix of Ellie Gouldings “My Blood,” and originals “Into The Night,” “Without You” ft. Austin Paul and “Things We Can Do” ft. Reva DeVito with the edgy, intimate art space of the 285 Kent warehouse and you have a completely fresh experience and the setting for some hot hot dancing. I was really surprised so many people kept their clothes on in the steamy room with such sexy vibes…

I highly recommend catching his show the next time he stops by you. Kastle’s album was fantastic and to hear it in a live setting, artfully triggered with a keyboard setup is otherworldly. This type of sublime, chill show was definitely something completely new to electronic music and I would go again in a heartbeat!

The Dirt 114: Curses! + Three Wise

05 02 2013

Property of Gotta Dance Dirty

Continuing our artist Dirt series I decided to team up with Cursesthe mysterious Gotham house music ghost who has been haunting the underground lately.  I have somehow managed to catch him live three times in past few months and each time I seem to fall in love a little more. Dark, deep and delectably smooth his mixes are quickly becoming the soundtrack to my New York nights and I can’t wait to see what he has in store for us production wise. If you missed out we featured his mix for Marble Music a few days ago and don’t forget to check out his selection of timeless tracks below…

CURSES’ Timeless Tracks To Be Timeless With:

1. Robert Gorl – Mit Dir

I am always surprised this was made in the 80′s. The smooth late night into early morning vibes are epic. Listen to that arpeggio. Listen to his heartbroken pain.
2. The Potion – Dumbwaya

A New York House underground classic. The chopped vocals and rough em up percussion are tech-tribal tittilations.
3. Suicide – Cheree

Suicide will forever be timeless. The assault rifle guns yet smooth sailing ripple vocals always keep a trance in the dance.
4. Ce Ce Peniston – Finally

These pianos will forever bring a dance flooor to sweats, vocals of elevated ecstasy and unforgettable glamour.
5. Robert Owens – Be Your Friend

An instant dark, vivacious, and underground classic. Owens’ vocals bring an unnerving beauty that feels familiar yet ghost like. The stabs dark, yet up-lifting. Like a nightmare has changed it’s course and decided to bring grace and bliss to the club.

Isaac Tichauer – Take Over You

What can I say, I just love Isaac Tichauer. Out earlier today,  ”Take Over You” is the first little taste from his upcoming EP out on French Express. Deep and soulful, it’s delicious, and I can’t wait to hear what he’s going to come out with next!
Phoenix – Trying to be Cool (RAC Mix)

As a huge fan of Phoenix’s recent Bankrupt! album I was stoked to see this in my inbox today. RAC‘s mix is brighter and more summery than the original, substituting Phoenix’s rock vibes for a more groovy approach that will easily be a summer party favorite.

Joy Orbison – Donell

The whole past week I’ve had this latest DL from Joy Orbison on repeat. Gorgeous RnB vocals, poppin’ beat with a little bit of funk. This is definitely a track to get down and dirty to.

Miguel – Do you…(Cashmere Cat Remix)

Do you like drugs? Do you like hugs? Do you like love? Yeah….well me too.

Blond:ish and Climbers feat. Forrest – Back to Back

This one is a bit older, but I’ve found my self listening to it recently as the city starts to warm up for spring. Dark and melodic, chill vibes all around.

[Review] A-Trak at Brite Nites, Webster Hall NYC

04 25 2013

Property of Gotta Dance Dirty

Last Saturday we returned once again to one of our favorite haunts, Webster Hall NYC. But this time it was a bit of a special occasion… aside from 4/20, A-Trak was back in town and Webster was kicking off the start of their new weekly Brite Nites party….and it was an insane night to say the least. Check out what went down after the jump!

Arriving to a jam-packed Webster Hall as “FOOOOOOLLLLSSS GOOOOOOOOOLLD” blared over the speakers, I got to the mezzanine just in time to see the master DJ hit the decks. After a quick hello speech (which I honestly couldn’t even understand because the crowd was so amped up) A-Trak dove into his set spinning a mix of Hip-Hop, Electro, Trap and some funky shit I couldn’t identify but was just hella good. The Clockwork remix of “Perfect Storm” by Pink is Punk & Benny Benassi, “Raw” by Fedde Le Grand expertly mixed into the Jacques Lu Cont remix of “Ich R U,” “Big Bad Wolf” by Duck Sauce (A-Trak and Armand Van Helden’s project), and “Trizzy Turnt Up,”  all made an appearance.

But with A-Trak’s signature style he went through more tracks in a 10 minute period than most DJs do in an hour, perfectly mixing and mashing and controlling the crowd. The intensity and energy continued to rise throughout his 90 minute set until, of course, he ended the night with the brand new Daft Punk “Get Lucky.”

All in all this night was one of the best I’ve ever had at Webster…and if this is what their new Saturday Brite Nites party is gonna be like, you can expect me to be there alot more often. Check out their upcoming shows below and hope to see you there New York!

[Stream] Phoenix – Entertainment(Hot Natured Remix)

04 19 2013

Property of Gotta Dance Dirty

Hot Natured fans rejoice! Breaking from their tradition of not really doing remixes, the talent quartet recently released this stream of their take on Phoenix’s “Entertainment” and it couldn’t be more delicious. Turning the indie-dance hit into more of a sultry deep groove, this one is definitely going to be a summer staple.

“We’re all big fans of Phoenix. We had kind of decided that Hot Natured wouldn’t do remixes but we couldn’t turn this down. We broke off finishing the album and all got it involved. Our first proper Hot Natured remix.” – Hot Natured
