TINK- WHEN I’M LIT (THE GTW REWORK)

05 21 2013

TINK GTW

Chicago producer GTW, real name James King, transforms a decent track from rapper Tink into a wondrous assortment of tribal beats and subtle house undertones coated in a rich r/b aesthetic.

Party Omo – Wus Good / Curious

05 19 2013

“Wus Good / Curious” is so densely layered that it constantly keeps you coming back for more. It starts off like any good make-out session, slow and sweet, and quickly turns into something unexpected, yet completely warranted by the end.

Party Omo remains relatively anonymous on the interweb, but there is a cryptic Pinterest account as well as Twitter handle with over 3,000 followers and only four tweets. Now that’s swag.

There’s rumours that Party Omo is fucking with the OVO gang, which seems like a pretty good fit if you consider his/her sound, marketing tactics, and anonymous persona, (ie. the Weeknd circa 2010). Keep your eyes out for more information, as we’re expecting big things from Party Omo in the coming months.

KURT – Texas Slow (Official Video)

05 14 2013

KURT

Kurt Rockmore, who goes by KURT professionally, is an example of an artist I’d love to hang-out with. He recently emailed Winnie Cooper with “Humble Approach” as the subject line, even though he’s opened for such acts as J.Cole, Ryan Leslie, Yo Gotti, Iggy Azeala, Joey Badass, and Action Bronson.

His latest project – entitled Red Carpet Ignorance - was written entirely by KURT and features Bun B on the track Don’t Need ‘Em. He fuses hip-hop with R/B to create something that is lyrically honest but still worthy of mainstream attention. KURT is not only a talented artist, but from what I can tell via URL, he’s a pretty stand-up dude too. For more information on KURT, check out his website for Red Carpet Ignorance.

CONTEST: KASTLE & KAYTRANADA TICKETS

05 14 2013

Kastle at Fortune

May Long Weekend is fast approaching us, and what better way to spend your guilt-free Sunday night than at Fortune Sound Club with two rising musical stars.

After a mesmerizing show at Fortune Sound Club last January, electronic-artist Kastle will be returning to Vancouver with Montreal-based sensation Kaytranada on May 19. Kastle’s forward-thinking music results from his long-time love of hip-hop and R&B, fused with the magnetizing effect that garage, house, dubstep and bass-heavy music has had on him. Kastle’s unique fusions will fit nicely with Kaytranada’s modern take on the luscious sounds of 90′s r/b.

This night will also feature performances by local acts 8PRN and Blue Version. While early bird tickets are sold-out, advanced tickets can still be purchased online or in-person at  Zulu, Red Cat, Highlife, and Beatstreet recrods.

For a chance to win a pair of tickets, email winnieguestlist(@)gmail.com with your name by Friday, May 17th at 5:00pm. You must be attending the Facebook event page and ‘like‘ Winnie Cooper on Facebook to qualify. 19+ only. Please Use “Long Weekend Contest” as the subject line.

Playlist: Free Ja Rule

ja rule

Regardless of your feelings towards the Murder Inc. crew, Ja Rule and Irv Gotti incapsulated everything wrong (and seemingly perfect) about hip-hop in the early 2000′s. While Ja’s music relied more on mainstream appeal than lyrical authenticity, he knew (subconsciously or not) what would sell in a climate obsessed with TRL and commodified thug culture. He covered up rhymes about “fucking hoes” and “smoking blunts” with Ashanti’s sweet voice and Top 40 approved beats, making parents of thirteen-year-old girls a little less worried about that dreaded “parental advisory” sticker.

To celebrate Ja Rule’s brilliance, and his recent release from federal prison last week, here are a few of his greatest musical accomplishments throughout the past fourteen years. Everyone pray for a Ja Rule trap comeback.
