No More Melt

03 14 2013

Finally the heat wave has moved on and we are all now embracing the cool change. Bit of a mega-post, full of all kinds of hotness:

Krautrock outfit Dreamworld features Klaus Fichter and Rolf Fichter (both were involved with Yatha Sidhra) who brought out two albums in the early eighties. ‘On Flight to the Light’ being my highlight.

MP3: Dreamworld – Summerdays

This track is a great cut from Wilbert Longmire’s brilliant LP “Sunny Side Up”.

Nice reggae from Dadawah.

MP3: Dadawah – Seventy-Two Nations

Smooth track ‘The Star of a Story’ from disco-funk group Heatwave – lifted from their 2nd album “Central Heating”.

One of my fav old prog-rock bands, King Crimson, released the album “Discipline” in 1981 – their first album following a seven-year hiatus. Crimson has a different sound on this album compared to previous work. The New Wave feel is established from the involvement of ex-David Bowie/Frank Zappa guitarist/singer Adrian Belew, who also was a major collaborator with Talking Heads. ‘The Sheltering Sky’ is a lengthy instrumental, a stand-out from the rest of the tracks from the album due to its psychedelic mellow sound. Sounds a lot like Ozric’s “Arborescence”.

HAT from Japan is a trio featuring Tetsu Inoue, Uwe Schmidt (Atom Heart) and YMO’s Haruomi Hosono. “DSP-Holiday” released in 1998; still sounds fresh.

Bamboo Musik: Mo Morris

03 12 2013

BAMBOO MUSIK PRESENTS: PRIORITY DELIVERY (upgrade) w/ MO MORRIS (UK)
// FRI 15 MARCH 2013 @ THE MERCAT
// SUPPORT: Bamboo Musik DJs
// FB EVENT
// TIP: $0 entry fee if in postman attire

It’s that time again, although this time our special guest is UK born/Indo resider Mo Morris, known for his work with ‘A Mountain of One’ and now recently ZSOU. Check the blurb!:

In 2007, Morris formed the trio A Mountain Of One giving the cosmic disco movement its desperately needed fresh perspective, transplanting it into a dream world of progressive rock, Americana and pastoral folk. After two celebrated long player trips, the collaborative ship sunk but allowed Morris and bass player Merrick Adams to captain a new direction with ZSOU. With their heavy voodoo percussion and analogue twists, the duo celebrate the ritual of dance and hypnotic states. Issuing a double A side on luxury culture hub LN-CC, the release shoots a technicolor ecstasy rush to the soul and saw DJ support from Dr Dunks, Tim Sweeney and Kenji Takimi. ZSOU have also remixed the legendary Phil Manzanera (Roxy Music). As a DJ, Mo Morris unfolds his wild imagination with psychedelic, deep and brooding sets of future-past.

For a sample of what to expect, check out Mo Morris’ tour mix, live in Jakarta (courtesy of NIMH’s soundcloud).

Mo is also playing at the H.I.T.S. Warehouse Happening in Sydney with Canyons, Noise in My Head and Tamas Jones (Hey Convict!).

Forces

02 21 2013

Melbourne EBM/industrial based Forces is made up of Alex Akers & Tom Kernot, a definite favourite to us here at Waves. I was lucky to receive a lovely package, the Forces debut 12″, in the mail two weeks back (I think) from D. Stricker (cheers man! sorry for slow uptake).

The self-titled debut Forces EP is out now on Midnight Juggernauts’ label Siberia Records. Additional talent present on the release is the always stellar Matthew Brown (additional synth programming on ‘Altered States’) and mixing by Presets’ Kim Moyes (on ‘Overland’). The 12″ can be purchased from the Siberia merch site – limited to 500 ; heavy stock ; great package. Or if you want ease-of-use, buy the digital here.

In addition to the 12″, Forces are also pushing out a new single from the EP, ‘Overland (In My Mind)’ – check the brilliant video below ; Directed and Produced by Alex Akers:

/ / /

To celebrate the new single and the new record Forces has been on tour. Luckily enough, there is a Forces record launch tomorrow night (22/2/2013) in Melbourne, presented by Siberia, Vice and Noisey at the Liberty Social featuring Kangaroo Skull, Nun, White Hex and HTRK DJs. Don’t miss it!

Phil Manzanera

01 29 2013

LN-CC, otherwise known as Late Night Chameleon Cafe, is a concept store based in London that stocks a wide array of clothing, amongst other things (check out the great audio gear!).

LN-CC very late last year initiated their in-house record label, providing a platform to release the work of artists who influence LN-CC on a personal level. To kick off the label, LN-CC Recordings on the 12/12/12 launched a 4-part 12″ series, featuring legendary Roxy Music guitarist Phil Manzanera. LN-CC had access to the master-tapes of his solo back catalogue and the ability to work directly with Phil to create some brilliant remixes in co-lab with a wide array of talent – Kenji Takimi, Velvet Season and the Hearts of Gold, Daniele Baldelli, Zsou, Cos/Mes, Secret Fingers, and Theo Parrish.

A very well thought out series with beautiful packaging. Top notch LN-CC! Purchase from their website.

In conjunction with the launch of the remixes, LN-CC hosted an intimate interview and Q&A with Phil at the LN-CC store in London which can be seen here.

Daniel Wang

01 16 2013

ANIMALS DANCING PRESENTS: DANIEL WANG
// FRI 18 JANUARY 2013 @ THE MERCAT
// SUPPORT: Animal Dancing DJs (Andee Frost, Tornado Wallace & Otologic)
// TICKETS: $30 @ MOSHTIX
// FB EVENT

Animals Dancing are excited to announce the long-overdue Melbourne return of Daniel Wang

Born in California and raised in Taiwan, the well-traveled producer Daniel Wang has been among the most restless and classically minded members of the dance music community over the last decade. Wang made a name for himself in the mid ’90s Chicago house scene with a series of playful, funky, sample-delic 12-inches on his own Balihu label, compiled on 1998′s I Was a Disco Malcontent: The Best of Balihu Records. Rooted

in the pioneering disco and techno innovations of Giorgio Moroder, Kraftwerk, Francois K, Arthur Russell, the releases earned Wang a reputation for being something of a dance music purist, a notion underscored by his philosophy that the whole of house music can be summed up in 200 pieces of vinyl, while all the rest are merely variations.

Later in the ’90s, Wang relocated to New York City, where he forged a friendship with the similarly retro-minded Morgan Geist of Metro Area. By this point, Wang had given up on the samples which cluttered his early releases, taking his back-to-basics ethic one step further. He’d also become an avid theremin enthusiast. In 2001, Geist’s Environ label put out Wang’s soulful, ’70s boogie-inspired album Idealism.

Wang left the states in 2003 to live in Berlin, where his involvement in the club culture plays an important role in the city’s gay culture and political climate.
