LAST RHYTHM

12 07 2011

Italian DJ/producer Giulio Benedetti released a stack of 12″s throughout the early 90′s on the quality Italo-House label, ‘OUT Records’, mainly under the alias of Last Rhythm.

‘Open Your Mind’ was his second release, and his first on ‘OUT’ (the first having dropped on the Italian ‘American Records’ in 1990.

This is sweet open-air, summer faux-tropo house.

ZOOLOOK

11 30 2011

I keep on re-visiting this album so I thought it was worthy of a follow up post (the original being posted here).

Ive also been in love with the new Daniel Lopatin (Oneohtrix Point Never) album, ‘Replica’, which is built partly using fragments of human speech and the sounds ‘inbetween the sounds’ in words and vocals. It seems to me that both Jarre and Lopatin have followed a similar trajectory in their synth-etic exterminations, at different points in time. ‘Replica’ is almost a modern take on the same idea.

ALEEM

11 30 2011

After finally getting around the watching the Larry Levan documentary recently, Maestro, I have been hooked on this track, old as it is.

A Paradise Garage anthem laid down by two NYC brothers, Taharqa Aleem and Tunde Ra Aleem, back in 1984 on their own label, NIA Records.
If you haven’t yet seen Maestro, at least skip to the section where a diehard Paradise regular describes, in emotional detail, the feeling and atmosphere of hearing this dropped alongside Prince’s ‘Doves Cry’. Amazing.

APHRODISIAC

11 21 2011

Waking up in a daze on the coast of some strange island, being lapped at by the waves while the jungle behind you pounds bass. (Nu Groove Records, 1989).

ANTONI MAIOVVI

11 21 2011

Antoni Maiovvi (the italo alias of Anton Maiof) came to my attention after seeing a remix credit pop up by Melbourne’s own dark, theremin-laden electronic act, The Night Terrors.
This HI-NRG-italo anthem comes off his ‘Hot Biology’ 12″, and comes with the equally as energetic flip ‘Spinning In Cyberspace’.

TRIBAL CONFUSION

11 21 2011

Released in 1990 on the NYC based label Strictly Rhythm and a collab between Josh Wink and King Britt, this track was a Deep/Tribal House classic.

DORMANNU

11 13 2011

Relatively short lived US outfit Dormannu only spray into existence late into the the goth punk game (’83) and released their debut album in ’85. Though behind the game a bit, the album is a decently forgotten classic. Shame that not even a Peel Session could keep the band together, and they disbanded into history not long after.

This track skirts the line between a dark synth-goth beat and 80′s dance-pop, and really should have been a hit.

LOVE TEMPO #3: 11/11/11

11 07 2011

Love Tempo goes down again, this time on that night of nights that will only come once in our lifetime, 11/11/11.

Last time they had LA Vampires (100% Silk/Not Not Fun) as the special guest DJs, shit got deep, it got wild and it was really really really really really really fun. Love Tempo the third is upon us; and it’s still not serious, it’s about letting it all hang out. Love Tempo DJs doing it for kicks, claps & edits.

It’s at The Buffalo Club on 11/11/11 at 11:11pm. $5 / $10. You can bring your old lady or your other number one.

BAD THOUGHTS

11 02 2011

Icy Melbourne synthwave duo, The Emergency, are still rearing their cold heads from time to time, but most recently it’s been under their solo monikers: WORNG (Morgan McWaters), and Bad Thoughts (Milo Kossowski).

Bad Thoughts, in Milo’s words, is “when sleep won’t come, the mind makes you a passenger. Thoughts buried by the day’s distractions rise to the surface: strange lusts, deadly impulses, tangled conundrums. Bad Thoughts. These songs could be a document of such nocturnal journeys”.
It’s dark and expansive, yet full of deep hues and cosmic landscapes.

Milo’s first single, ‘Remember’, is to be released on the new Sydney label YOU, run by designer/producer Jesse Correy/Cyberjesus (the website is still under construction; check back in a few weeks). The video for the single, above, was put together by the hyper talented and renowned team at Melbourne based studio Moop Jaw, and will be launched December 1st at The Gasometer (with WORNG and Matthew Brown) along with a 7″ he’s released on Metal Postcard records (called Come to Life, which you can hear on Soundcloud).

OCTO OCTA

11 02 2011

The momentum in the blog world is completely insatiable for new new new songs, remixes, artists, edits, releases. It’s built up a ridiculous thrust which has created a totally unsustainable and unlistenable swarm of productions and producers, which, in a few weeks are seen as old news.

The only reason I rant I because this track from US producer, Octo Octa, is now apparently seen as ‘dated’ and ‘played’ (so I’ve read) since it was released about two months ago on (faultless) label 100% Silk. Who makes these friggin rules?

‘Let Me See You’ is a heavy bounce, 90′s chord-house throwback that just sounds huge, and probably one of the most slick tracks released by Amanda on 100% Silk so far.
