FLUXBLOG 2003 SURVEY MIX

02 29 2012

The celebration of the 10th anniversary of this site continues on with this collection of the best and most notable music of 2003. As I’ve said before, I think 2003 ranks among the very best years for popular music, and is almost certainly the best year for music of the past decade. The sheer number of all-time classic songs from across a variety of genres is astounding, and if you look over the track listing, you’ll note that a majority of the finest artists of the 00s either came on the scene or reached some kind of artistic peak at this time. The first few years of the decade yielded some great music, but this is when the character of the 00s really kicks in.

Here’s a Spotify playlist featuring most of the set, courtesy of Sarah Peters. The survey mixes for 2002, 2010 and 2011 are still up. Check in on April 2nd for a look back on 2004.

TIMOTHY WISDOM

02 29 2012

Let it be known that I despise preview clips in SoundCloud (or any other media). It’s pretty clear why the practice exists, it’s still annoying though. It’s especially painful when the tunes are so effing good. Take for example, the latest single on BOMBASTIC JAM.

Hailing from Vancouver, TIMOTHY WISDOM brings the ghetto and the funk together, then folds in a tonne of bass for one of the most exciting singles I’ve heard this year. The EP is exclusive to beatport for a couple weeks so peep the clips below then grab the full cuts.

Dood’s been around for a bit. Below are some tunes for download. Check out Timothy’s SoundCloud page for more.

WATCH IT TUMBLE DOWN.

02 29 2012
Brazilian discohaus duo Database wake up in the dream of Savoir Adore and get to work immediately. Party Paul's vocals float like a heavenly buoy through a current of rippling synths, as crunchy Jamaica-esque guitars and Delphic-esque cutaways keep things cracking throughout. Savoir play Popshop tonight at Santos Party House getting things started at 8:15 before St. Lucia, Chiddy Bang and The Knocks keep things electric until the early hours.

MP3: "Dreamers" (Database Remix) - Savoir Adore

EMPRESARIOS

02 29 2012

Hailing from the Washington DC area, the EMPRESARIOS mix diverse cultures and sounds together. As one could imagine by the band’s name, there’s some obvious Latin influences at play. It’s evident in “Bestia Remixed” EP.

They enlist four top producers for some blazing remixes on their latest single. First up is J.Boogie conjuring up a deep digital cumbia reworking of Cumbia Salvaje, the tempo is up and the bass is booming!

♥♥♥ The man of the moment, BOBBY C SOUND TV, created a ghetto funk remix of Bailando that is just unstoppable. This is the standout of the bunch. ♥♥♥

Dutch producer Solo Moderna has turned Sentimiento into a one-of-a-kind tropical bass anthem from another planet.

Rounding out the EP is Stereo 77′s ‘Ricanstruction’ of Bestia, turning it into bass-heavy Latin house number that oozes that Miami vibe. It just so happens this tune is available for free download too.

If you can’t handle the vocals, instrumental versions are also available. Check it from iTunes or beatport.

Review: WZRD (Kid Cudi & Dot Da Genius) – WZRD

02 29 2012

D | 02.28.12 | Universal | MP3 | CD

Listen, I don’t really know how to tell you this. I’ll start with the good news, I guess. There are stretches on Kid Cudi and Dot Da Genius’ self-titled debut as the band WZRD that are somewhat enjoyable. Kid Cudi is a better singer/guitarist than Lil Wayne. There are many ways this album could be a complete train wreck, and it isn’t. Hooray! Thanks for tuning in to the good news portion of this review.

This album is bad. Not in a get-this-out-of-my-ears-right-now kind of way, but in a the-only-reason-anyone-would-ever-listen-to-this-is-because-it’s-Kid-Cudi kind of way. That may not be the most damning criticism, nor should it be. Albums like WZRD are critical stepping stones along the path of artists trying to define and refine their sound. But in the long run, this album is the middle school class picture you never want your kids to see. It’s Cudder’s artistic adolescence, and it sounds a lot like that band you played in back in high school.

Look, a lot of diehard Cudi fans will like this album. Cudder has always been a rapper with feeeeeelings, and hasn’t been afraid to express himself in a personal way on record. He’s sober now. He’s taking risks with his music. He’s projecting positivity. Those are all good things.

Unfortunately, this album doesn’t follow through on those good things. When it comes to execution, WZRD is heavy, dull, and melodramatic. The album sinks under the weight of plodding guitar riffs and halting, half-sung vocals. Despite sometimes interesting beat-oriented production from Dot Da Genius, WZRD’s eleven tracks mush together, and the album seems much longer than its relatively brief forty-seven minutes.

After the building and brooding instrumental intro of “The Arrival,” which hints at potentially exhilarating pomp and circumstance, WZRD screeches to an early halt with “High Off Life.” The song is repetitive and cheesy, and Cudi’s delivery is so choppy that at times it borders on patois. You know those plastic karaoke machines with the echoing microphones that you give to little kids? This song sounds a lot like Cudi singing positive lyrics to a Nirvana instrumental through one of those.

I don’t want to be overly harsh. There are snippets of WZRD that are wholly decent. “The Dream Time Machine” – an Emperor of the Sun-aided track that ditches the power chords and lets Cudi roam through a more familiar environment – has more sonic depth than anything else on the album, mercifully stealing some of the focus from Cudi. “Where Did You Sleep Last Night” is a passable cover of the Lead Belly song by the same name (though it pales in comparison to both the original and Nirvana’s own cover). The first two-thirds of “Dr. Pill” are interesting, until the song wears out its welcome. Lead single “Teleport 2 Me, Jamie” is enjoyable, but mostly because of the central riff, which samples Desire’s “Under Your Spell.”

That’s about it. The rest of the album is nigh on inexplicable, a middling exploration of well-worn territory. The lyrics start out light and are repeated until they mean even less. Cudi cuts off notes too quickly and rarely sounds confident in his voice. “Efflictim” sounds like a C-side record from the runner-up in your local Battle of the Bands. “Live & Learn” starts with mediocre and ends with the worst minute-long stretch of the album. I could go on, but there’s no real reason to beat around the bush. To be blunt, there is no way this album would have ever been released if not on Cudi’s own newly-formed imprint.

Kid Cudi cites Hendrix, Nirvana, Pink Floyd, and ELO as inspiration for the album. You know who else has been influenced by those bands? Every band ever. I don’t fault this duo for trying something new. I fault them for doing it poorly.

Press Release:

MagicWands first garnered attention with the release of a noteworthy EP,MagicLove & Dreams, which quickly drew praise from publications likeNylonwho applauded their “sparkling, psychedelic-pop gems.” The band honed their live chops, solidifying their fanbase touring alongside The Kills, The Horrors, The Raconteurs, The Black Keys, The Virgins, Black Kids and The Teenagers, as well as appearances at SXSW and Lollapalooza.

Their debut full-length, Aloha Moon,is a cosmic dance through a universe where voices echo, keyboards shimmer and guitars splashlike giant waves on a distant planet’s shores. Having ambiguously dubbed their sound “lovewave,” each track is distinctly different yet allshare the common theme of spaced-out tropical dreams, which isn’t surprising when one considers the disparate locations whereAloha Moonwas made: San Francisco Bay, a cabin in Echo Park and under the stars of the Palm Desert at night. Some of the tracks onAloha Moonwere mixed by acclaimed producer Dave Sardy (LCD Soundsystem).

Oliver Cheatham – I Like to Party (Kolombo Rework)

02 29 2012

“Oh, it’s that Daft Punk track.” NO! It’s the straight up original funky song from none other than Oliver Cheatham. Kolombo delivers an excellent rework here, updated for 2012. This is what a rework should be. Cuts of the original song, some new beats and new synth lines as well. Hat tip to Kolombo for doin it right and being kind enough to offer it up as a free download.

Kid Ink

02 29 2012

Kid Ink

Upon first glance, you might mistake newcomer Kid Ink for Pittsburgh rapper Wiz Khalifa aka the dude lucky enough to bang Amber Rose.

After all, they’re both pot smoking pinners with enough tattoo’s to generate an illustrated adult novel.  Even their music bares striking similarities to one another.  They leave the gun violence and ghetto tales behind for a sound that is surprisingly PG.  Okay, maybe more like 14A.

But with that said, Kid Ink hails from Los Angeles and exudes that authentic West Coast flare which unfortunately has become more of a commodity than a true lifestyle in recent years.  And while I’ll admit Ink’s music isn’t overly sentimental, his snappy one liners and feel good beats more than make up for that.

With several mixtape’s already completed, 2012 stands to be a huge year for Kid Ink.  He was just recently included on XXL’s annual Freshman Class List and his track “Time of Your Life” made the top 20 on iTune’s hip-hop chart.  So I suggest checking out this chron lovin’ youngster before he becomes too mainstream to truly appreciate.

Evy Jane: "Sayso"

02 29 2012
<p class="p1">Experimental electronic musicians aren't quite done yet finding new ways to creatively deface traditional R&amp;B. In the past three years alone, they've pushed it underwater and listened to it sing from beneath the waves; tossed it on a bonfire and recorded the sound of it melting; watched it evaporate and recorded the fumes. Vancouver duo <a href="http://soundcloud.com/heavy-evy" target="_blank">Evy Jane</a> are the latest to bat at the music like curious cats. On "Sayso", vocalist Evelyn Mason sings like she's stumbling around a room in a codeine haze. The lyrics hint darkly at similar sentiments: "There was something in the things you gave me/ I was losing all my self control." It's a queasy performance, underlined by the drums' staggered knock. What raises the song firmly out of the realm of "art-student-fuckery" is the piercing chorus, where Mason pleads repeatedly: "Didn't I tell you/ Not to be so kind to me?" Stunning.</p> <p> Evy Jane: Sayso </p> <p>[from Evy Jane's self-titled EP; out now via <a href="http://kingdeluxe.ca/" target="_blank">King Deluxe</a>]</p>

Sharooz slams Miami Music Week

02 29 2012

Sharooz took to his Facebook earlier today to give his 2 cents on the US based musc conference Miami Music Week.

“Miami WMC ? 10 days of hearing badly edited Avicii bootlegs played badly off laptops, muscled up meatheads, not being able to get into the parties even though you’re on the list, overpriced hotels, coked out jocks.. think I’ll stay in LA thanks.”

It is quickly emerging that there is a strangle hold within Miami music scene, filled with owners who are too afraid to explore outside that of the billboard charts with the recent Dennis Ferrer incident bringing it all to light.

Anyway, Miami Music Week sounds awesome!.. If you are a cast member from Jersey Shore!

Perfume Genius: "Hood"

02 29 2012
<p>For all of the <a href="http://pitchfork.com/news/45547-watch-a-new-episode-of-1-with-perfume-genius/" target="_blank">exhausting intimacy</a> and <a href="http://pitchfork.com/news/45217-matador-says-googleyoutube-rejected-perfume-genius-promo-video-for-being-not-family-safe/" target="_blank">timely political discourse </a>surrounding the sophomore <a href="http://pitchfork.com/artists/28685-perfume-genius/" target="_blank">Perfume Genius</a> record, <i><a href="http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/16335-put-your-back-n-2-it/" target="_blank">Put Your Back N 2 It</a></i>, it's worth pausing to note that Mike Hadreas has an exceptional knack for songcraft, period. The poignant, full-band "Hood" is Hadreas at his most melodic, and in two minutes, he articualtes a specific, resonant feeling of bittersweet self-realization: "You would never call me baby, if you knew me true." Hadreas delivers this concession with an air of lyrical optimism that is matched by the song's sonic warmth and comparatively strong instrumental build, suspending a soft tension and honest emotional purity throughout. Recent years have seen more than a few male singers sitting at pianos, using strong and singular vocals to attempt at tapping into something new and true, but Hadreas does this better than most. And to that, "Hood" is an accessible and succinct testament.</p> <p> Perfume Genius: Hood </p> <p>[from <i>Put Your Back N 2 It</i>; out now via <a href="http://www.matadorrecords.com/" target="_blank">Matador</a>]</p>

02 29 2012

Djemba Djemba (St. Andrew) just created this fine beat and is now looking for a talented MC to flow over it.  If you or someone you know have what it takes, download the track, spit hot fire over it and send it to Djemba Djemba at andswan@gmail.com.
