Inbox Update

04 29 2009

Finally went through my inbox from the last week, not exactly the most popular stuff. It's kind of the whole point of this type of post, so hey, give it a chance. First off is the Grandtheft remix of Walter Meego, I'm pretty sure I've posted Grandtheft in the past. Anyways, I love this original track and the remixes of it. It's a bit of a lighter remix of the track as, it didn't completely warp it into something different. It works. The Trash Yourself remix of Glasnost is a bit more club or trance, it's entering an area I'm unfamiliar with anyways, but it stuck out from the other tracks I listened to. I like I like. And lastly, the remix of Emil & Friends' Tigerstripe. It really reminds me of oldschool MSTRKRFT, which I can't get enough of. It's that dirty sound that for some reason I haven't heard in a long time.

A1 + Ace Bassline

More new ish from A1 Bassline, this time mixing the eff out of Frankmusik, Ghost Frequency, and Little Boots. I love how Christian instead of throwing together a half-assed remix and sending it over in some zshare link... will instead collect toegether a good half dozen solid tracks with that same familiar bassline sound we all love in that up tempo-dubstep-hybrid genre (all in ace 320 kbs bitches).

Lollapalooza Lineup Announced!

04 21 2009
rage_lolla

Chicago's 'biggest' outdoor music festival of the year (i say that in pure size only, not necessarily in anticipation) has finally announced their lineup. Three days and nights of rock, folk, indie, hip hop and electro. And well... I'd have to say its a bit underwhelming.

At least underwhelming in regards to the closing acts. No Daft Punk, no Radiohead, no Rage... just The Killers (tic). Seriously not into listening to Depeche Mode promote their new album, never liked Tool, the Killers are sell outs, Jane's Addiction hasn't been relevant in 15 years, Kings of Leon frickin played a 4pm set two years ago and are now headlining? No thanks... Beastie Boys are the only interesting ones.

But to be honest, it's never the headliners that make this festival successful. It's the day acts that makes the cost of your ticket worthwhile. And there are PLENTY of good ones this year. Out and about spread thru the three days are dozens of rock/folk/indie staples in many of your playlists. Arctic Monkeys, Crystal Castles, Fleet Foxes, Friendly Fires, Hey Champ, Passion Pit, Vampire Weekend, Animal Collective, etc.

But then there's the ever growing and ever more popular Perry's Tent (for this blogs' readers). Here you'll find some of electronica's biggest names and acts: MSTRKRFT, Simian Mobile Disco, Deadmau5, Boys Noize, Crookers, A-Trak, Bloody Beetroots, LA Riots, and a dozen more. I'll be spending most of my time here as its like our own Ultra Festival w/o the $500 plane ticket during spring break season.

Trouble Vision vs Dead Fish vs Dirty Canvas

04 16 2009

Hold tight - Trouble Vision are back with their fifth outing, showcasing some of the most exciting sounds in British underground dance music. Teaming up with label Dead Fish and london night Dirty Canvas, TV have put together arguably their best line-up yet, in terms of exciting names stirring up a buzz.

This officially launches Mowgli's new label Deadfish, a joint project with fellow Italian-turned-Londoner Solo, that arose from sharing a studio together. A sub-label is in on the cards too, 'FreshFish'. DeadFish focuses on big house and techno beats, while FreshFish offers sounds more minimal in essence.

Mowgli's been smashing the underground scene for a couple of years now with his inventive remixing and twitchy house tunes. Since his immensely fun Chemical Brothers and Michael Jackson remixes, he's pulled his production style back a bit, but retained that fun bounce, turning a little more towards the minimal; assuming his Minimow monicker for the deeper, techy numbers. Exotic flavours resonate throughout his remix of Zombie Disco Squad's 'Eurovision' (ZDS are definitely ones to watch this year). And one of his older tunes, a remix of MJ's 'Bad', nails a fidgety, rasping bassline:

Zombie Disco Squad - Eurovision (Mowgli Remix) [pelski highly recommends]

Michael Jackson - Bad (Mowgli Remix)

Partner in crime, Solo, made an appearance at the last Trouble Vision (check some of his tunes in my post here) and will be smashing Room 1. Hot on the heals of some stirling remix material, Solo has number of highly anticipated releases (namely 'The Big Stef EP'). Solo's aptly named 'Congoloid' is gathering alot of support, wonderfully wielding some bumpy tropical house beats. And Mowgli, as his Minomow alter ego, strips it down with a subtle techy rework. The original is a must and can be found on a twin release with Zombie Disco Squad on the 'Congo Fire' EP. An older production is Solo and Mowgli's remix of Elite Force invigorating, whirring tech-house stuff:

I've already posted on Riva Starr a number of times; one of my favourite producers right now - listen to his enchanting tech-house mix here and his exceptional Laidback Luke and The Doors remixes here. Pelski [highly] recommends you check out Riva Starr's set, it's bound to be an intriguing mix of house, electro and techno. His remix of KRS-1's hip-hop classic chops that acapella allong to some rolling tech, while Vouxhall brings chunky thuds of bass (techno-heads ought to seek out Tom Green's superb remix).

KRS-1 - Sound of Da Pecan (Riva Starr ReChunk) [pelski highly recommends]

Riva Starr - Vouxhall

Don't forget electro filth maestros Nadastrom will be nestled among all these names. Nadastrom's ghetto-tech banger 'Pussy' has been ripping up dancefloors all over. 'Pussy' booms out everything, from a famous R'n'B vocal sample (Soul II Soul) and bmore percussive beats to hefty eletro riffs and a buzzing bassline. Their remix of 'Back Up In This' is a bit of departure from their usual brand of electro as is his lovely exclusive 40 minute TV megamix, filled with tribal tech-house percussion and clappy shuffles. The tracklist is on the left (and attached to the artwork), click the image to download it.

Additionally, the established and pioneering dubstep DJ Chef will be heading Room 1 - a busy man who holds residencies all over Europe, including London DMZ and FWD, as well as running his long-standing radio show on Rinse FM.

Joker's one my favourite Dubstep artists right now(Check out my Joker post here), and will be shaking the TV dancefloor with his blasts of rumbling sub bass and 2-step, through Corsica's mighty Funktion 1 soundsystem. Having firmly stamped his name on the Bristol scene, Joker's keeping dubstep fresh, not purely resorting to floor-filler popularism, but swinging between 2-step sounds, crazy synth-work and grimey acapella-led productions. Each tune's catchy (without sounding commercial) and hugely diverse. Gullybrooks Lane's a whirring monster, while the jittery, brilliant 'Zariack' has been provided by Joker for the Grimeforum EP. :

Joker - Gully Brook Lane (Instrumental) [pelski highly recommends]

Mumdance, in Room2, is the guy who got everyone all hot and flustered with his inventive remix of Evil Nine late last year. His new remix of indie-electro outfit The Whip builds up through some juddery glitching before dropping into some full-on 90's synth-rave madness, before switching to a bubbly niche bassline.

The Whip - Divebomb (Mumdance Carnival Remix) [pelski highly recommends]

Santogold - Creator (Mumdance Mix)

OneMan will be providing the 4X4 fun, while Tomb Crew'll be playing out their usual crunky blend of hip-hop, garage, dubstep, house and bmore; always immensely fun. And one of my favourite remixes of the Dead Prez classic is Tomb Crew's simple, sprightly baltimore edit. It fits perfectly:

Tomb Crew - Bigger Than [pelski highly recommends]

It's gonna be a big one.

Exclusive ‘Blah Blah Blah’ Mix Series EP 14

04 14 2009
One producer to really make me sit up in 2009 is Riva Starr. His weird thudding house release on Claude Von Stroke's WTF EP brought him into the lime-light in 2008, but just when everyone thought they had his sound down, he to knocked everyone's expectation sideways with an altogether different tune - but equally weird and wonderfully - the bongo-infused War Drums. My personal favourite is the criminally overlooked tech-house beauty 'Generation Noize', posted here. Whether he's crafting bouncy house beats or minimal tech, Riva Starr's one of the most exciting producers around right now.

This exclusive 45 minute mix is quite simply captivating; every tune expertly chosen. From the outset this cheerful tech-house mix ropes you in with Renaissance Man's huge 'Spraycan' all the way through to the soothing Jesse Rose album finale. And there's a couple of upcoming Riva Starr remix gems to preview in there too:

See Riva Starr smash Room 1 of Trouble Vision on 24th April.

Watch out for more mixes on the WeAreBlahBlahBlah series and subscribe to them here. Their blog's worth a peek too.

Chasing the status quo…

04 12 2009
Chase & status are crossing over all kinds of music fans to their acessible brand of dubstep and drum 'n' bass, in a similar way that Pendulum populized drum 'n' bass (albeit Chase & Status did it in a more listenable fashion). Their accessible, poppy brand of the two genres provides hooks, vocal samples and alot to be relished by the non-drum'n'basser. I suppose the Skream remix of La Roux was already introducing the genres to pop fans from all over. Over the last year now it's become progressively clear that dubstep doesn't have to be meditative and serious (a la Burial). Rusko's been shredding dancefloors with his filthy dubstep bangers for some time (though I do perhaps draw the line when it comes to Rusko's latest, 'Woo Boost' - poppy, populist dubstep of the worst kind).

By throwing in distincitve hooks and floor-filling combinations of d'n'b and dubstep, Chase & Status have gathered a mass following. There's few dance fans who can't instantly recognise the exotic echoes of 'Eastern Jam' or the grating warbling of 'Saxon' (even if its familiarity's derived from radio play-outs) by now.

OH SNAP!! is Maryland's genius hip-hop-electro genre-crosser who produced the brilliant (and genuinely witty, self-deprecating) 'Bill Cosby Sweater' and 'Too Fat To Be A Hipster'. Ignore his modest proclamation as 'your favourite mediocre whiteboy'. OH SNAP!! picks up the tempo of 'Saxon', with a ravey re-edit, chopped up, injecting some d'n'b, and abstracting a segment of the original's dubstep bass, forging a more driving, continuous bassline. Perfectly packaged for the dancefloor:

Chase & Status have been frantically running around deleting all traces of bootlegs that they've taken a disliking to. At a recent show, Tomb Crew and Chase & Status shared the bill. Tomb Crew dropped their remix of Eastern Jam, 'Western Jam'. But Chase and Status weren't happy, and said if they hear it being played again they'll eject the CD from the decks and snap it in half outright. And they've done a pretty good job of clearing all traces. Tomb Crew were forced to take it down from their myspace player, and any download links have all but disappeared (see beneath my Pelski Chart post for some comments from Tomb Crew themselves). But here I have Jayou's 'Western Jam', a filthy, fast-paced re-jigg. Jayou chucks a bit of everything in, switching between hyperactive drum'n'bass and wonky electro-dubstep:
Another name pushing the dirtier side of dubstep is Brighton's very own High Rankin. He ripped up Trouble Vision back in December and has since released a string of defiled, noisey monsters. In Mixmag, Annie Mac described him as 'dubstep for girls' (this was meant to be some kind of compliment, clearly overlooking the fact that mixmag readership is predominantly male). But who cares what she thinks? This is filth. And for men.

Bonus:

We won't mention 'Snoop Dogg Millionaire'...
